Principal's Weekly Update
Kia ora,
This week has been another hot one (weather wise) and it has been great to see our students making the most of their class swimming sessions, as well as the highly popular lunch time swim. We also started our Kapa Haka lessons, which will take place every Monday for the rest of the term. Currently all of the school is getting a bit of a taster, with the hope being that we can form a sizeable group to continue learning for the rest of the year.
In week 8 of this term we have the Life Education mobile classroom coming to visit us. It is timely that it is coming to see us in Term 1 as the students often learn some healthy habits or new strategies that they can practise over the course of the year. There will be no cost for your child to attend, but we will still require a permission slip to be completed.
School Donation
Just a reminder that Matapu School has ‘opted in’ to the school donation scheme. What this means for our school whanau is that you will not have to pay activity fees or school donations for your child/children this year. This decision will be reviewed at the end of 2020 and will continue to be made annually. More information about the scheme can be found on the Ministry of Education website. Please note:
Permission slips approving student participation in such events will still need to be completed.
Schools can still ask for donations towards the cost of overnight camps.
Subs for any sports will need to be paid for.
SPA Committee
As you are aware we have some tireless campaigners behind the scenes who put a huge amount of effort into our school on a regular basis. One of these groups is the School Parent Association, who have their AGM coming up on Thursday 27th February at 1 pm in the hall. Everyone is welcome to attend and I know they would love to see some new faces and members sign up. Sometimes with all of the busy events that we have at school, it is easy to forget what all of the funds that are raised go towards. Please see a list below of what the SPA Committee funded in 2019:
Lego robotics
$3,665.88
Large roller door for the bike shed
$350.00
Bike shed strengthening and bike racks
$492.00
Building materials for pool shed storage area
$394.53
Free bouncy castle at pet day
$200.00
56 mats, 1m x 1m x 40mm (mats for hall seating)
$3,179.00
Picnic tables for pool area (Loan A Lamb funds)
$1,000.50
New 3m wheel track for big playground
$3,137.36
Total: $12,419.27
This is really neat to see and it is quite nice to know where the funds for the item that you may have bought at Pet Day or the multiple sausages that you purchased at a school event went. The SPA have already confirmed that they will fund the PRIME Mathematics books for our students this year, along with providing every new Matapu School student with a school hat. On behalf of the whole Matapu community I would like to pass on my thanks to the Matapu School SPA Committee and look forward to seeing a good turn out at the AGM.

Room 1
This week Room 1 have been logging into Banqer and learning about Financial Literacy. Each child has a job to complete during the week to earn ‘money’. They are also paid a weekly wage of $300 that they then have to pay a bills out of. The bills include, electricity, wifi, seat rental and a bus fare to get to tech each week. At the end of the week they can choose to save their money or spend it on a reward. Parents of Room 1 children are invited to log in and see their child's progress. If you need a login code please email me at kelly@matapu.school.nz and I can forward that on to you. If you get a chance this week, please have a conversation with your child around the bills you need to pay to keep your household running. I bet they will be surprised!
