McKinley Mustang Newsletter

September 14th -18th

A Note from Mrs. Larson

It has been wonderful to watch Distance Learning over the last few weeks to see the amazing work that the entire McKinley community has put forth. Thank you to all who have shown grace to each other, resilience with distance learning, and compassion for our neediest students. I know there are many parts of this that are out of our hands. We all have our good and bad days. Please know that I am always here to support the best I can. With 520 students enrolled there, is no perfect fit for every student. We ask that you do what you are able to do and continue to strive to do your best.

Here are a few tips, tricks, and offerings for managing distance learning:

Make space for learning. This could be a corner of a room, a closet, a desk, or any dedicated space. Our sleep and play spaces are being invaded by the school, work and all the new must do’s; any separation we can make physically will also help us manage emotions and stay focused.

Keep a morning routine and set alarms on the iPads for Zoom times, breaks, work blocks, etc.

Have your child wear headphones to limit distractions. Please let the office know if this is something you are unable to purchase for your child. I will see what I can do to make this happen for you.

Take breaks, recesses, time away.

Lean on our village. Room parents have set up Facebook pages to connect. Please share ways that have been positive for you in DL. These positive messages can give hope to other families who might need it.

Ask for help. Your child’s teacher wants your child to be successful. On a normal day, they would be assessing, adjusting, encouraging, and modifying from the first bell to the last bell. Lots of informal discussions, tweaks, and communication would be happening in the hallways before and after school. Use office hours and parent square to check-in, ask for help, or get clarification; we are all here to support.

Be kind. Distance learning will never replace the magic that happens in physical classrooms but through this experience, we are learning, becoming stronger, and finding resilience. Be kind and allow yourself, your children, and their teacher's grace, empathy, time, and space to figure things out.

Kindness, Resilience and Grace,

Ani Larson
