Klem South - January Newsletter
Dear Klem South Families
On Monday, January 30th, Mrs. Land will be returning to Klem South as principal. She is excited to rejoin her Klem South family! Please join me in welcoming her back!
Since Mrs. Land will be returning, I will be signing off as interim principal and returning to Klem North as the assistant principal. I have once again enjoyed my time working with the students, staff and families here at Klem South. Thank you for the memories and the fun! Klem South is often known as the "sunny school." and the reason being is simple . . . the people (those young and those a bit older than "young") are all so kind and warm, making it a sunny place to be!
Much is happening in Klem South in January! One thing to note is our second, third, fourth and fifth graders are taking the NWEA MAP assessment in both reading and math. This assessment is used as just another piece of data to help us understand what our students already know and what we still need to teach them.
In closing, growing up it seemed that the weather in January was always predictable; however, these days the only thing that seems predictable about the weather is that it is unpredictable! We have 50 degree days and 10 degree days. We have snow, sleet, ice, and rain! Please make sure your children are dressed in layers so they are prepared for whatever mother nature brings!
Thank you again,
Laura Ballou

Joyful Rescues Holiday Donation Drive and Animal Rescue Program, by Mrs. Allocco
Thank you to all who donated items for Joyful Rescues’ Holiday Donation Drive! Your generosity is greatly appreciated! If you find other items you’d like to donate throughout the year, you’re welcome to send them in to me at Klem South or drop them off at Webster Petsmart between 11-2 on Saturdays during our weekly adoption events.
Did you know that millions of dogs and cats enter shelters each year and many are euthanized because there are not enough homes? Those that are lucky enough to make it to a no-kill shelter, such as Joyful Rescues, get a second chance at being placed in a committed, loving home.
Joye Turock, JR’s Director, and her husband Jeff, open up their home to hundreds of dogs each year as they wait for their forever families. Each dog has access to over eight, fenced in acres through a doggy door in the kitchen. Cats and kittens live in a separate “Cat House” on the premises or are placed in foster homes. All animals receive routine vet care, vaccinations, flea, tick and heartworm control and are spayed or neutered if they come unaltered. In addition to these basics, dogs are also microchipped. These expenses are paid for by adoption fees and other monetary donations received.
Once each year, JR holds a donation drive to collect specific items that need to be replenished on a routine basis. The students in my after school Animal Rescue Program helped to advertise this year’s donation drive by making posters and placing them throughout the school. Older students helped to place wish lists in teachers’ mailboxes and helped to organize and pack up the donations that were collected. In addition to helping with the donation drive, students learned all about rescue, including the importance of spaying and neutering and not purchasing puppies from a pet store or online. Thank you to all the students who participated in the program!
The students met dogs formerly from Joyful Rescues, who are now living happily in their forever homes. Two of the dogs, Roxi and Gracie, who belong to me, are now therapy dogs. Both dogs are registered with Therapy Dogs International and are part of my Tail Waggin’ Tutors program.
I hope you will consider adoption if/when you decide to add a dog or cat to your family!

THANK YOU TO THE WEBSTER CSD COMMUNITY!
Happy New Year to all! On behalf of the entire board of education, thank you for approving the capital project that was voted on by the Webster CSD community on December 13. The project, which will not exceed $43.5 million, will mean improvements to features at all 11 schools. These improvements include a new media center at Webster Thomas High School, a new cafetorium at Spry Middle School, and energy-efficient boilers at 10 of our 11 buildings, among many other items.
Your board is grateful to the school district community for its ongoing support of all we do together for our students. Thank you for coming out to vote for these improvements that will benefit our students and the entire community that uses our buildings. If you would like to learn more about the project, please visit websterschools.org/capitalproject.
