A WALKWAY ON O’NEAL BRIDGE
O’Neal Bridge, named for esteemed community and statewide leader, Edward Asbury O’Neal, opened to traffic in 1939. For approximately two years, it was a toll bridge, but, to the great relief of all who used this very welcome connecting link between Lauderdale and Colbert Counties, the toll was lifted. Because many – perhaps most – of the citizens in the two counties did not own vehicles at that time since they were still struggling from the devastating economic impact of the Great Depression, a pedestrian walkway was deemed a necessity. Note the photograph accompanying this week’s column that clearly shows the walkway. (There was also a walkway on the Old Railroad Bridge connecting Florence and South Florence.) Several years ago, with the near-exponential growth in the number of vehicles and the seldom-used walkway, it was determined that O’Neal Bridge should be dedicated totally to vehicle use. Occasionally, one sees a hardy soul walking across the bridge on the very narrow curbs on the outer edges of the vehicle lanes. That is definitely not what should happen!
