YikYak
Yik Yak is a social media smartphone application that was launched in 2013 and relaunched in 2021. It is available for iOS and allows people to create and view discussion threads within a five-mile radius. This application is anonymous.
Recently, in our area, there has been activity that is bullying in nature. Please monitor this and check in with your child to make sure they are involved responsibly if at all. If you become aware of something that is of a concern to you, you must report this directly to Yik Yak as we have no authority over this application. You should also report it to a high school administrator so that we can investigate it in accordance with our disciplinary procedures and protocols.
We have shut this application down within the Scarborough Public Schools network.
Also, related to this, SHS is in the planning stages with Detective Royle, of the Maine State Police, to bring a workshop to parents and students regarding internet and social media safety. Our plan is to offer a parent night in early February and then run a period-long workshop for each grade at the high school throughout that week. As we finalize these plans, more information will be sent out.
Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences
Dates for the spring Parent-Teacher conferences are Thursday, March 3, 2:45 - 7:15 PM, and also Thursday, March 17, 2:45 - 5:15 PM. Please put these dates in your calendar. More information will be forthcoming when we get closer to the opening of conference registration.
Semester II
The school calendar has Semester II beginning on Monday, January 24. Students received a copy of their Semester II schedule on Monday this week. If they have a question or concern, please have them see their school counselor directly. They are happy to help!

COVID
This week, coming back from vacation, there has certainly been an uptick in the number of cases related to Covid. Please reinforce the importance of wearing masks fully and correctly. At all times when you are inside SHS, your mask must be worn properly. Thank you for your help with this important protocol. If you have a student that tests positive, please make sure you contact the nurses in the clinic (730-5015). Lastly, please make sure that you follow the pre-screening protocols before coming to school.
Pool Testing
SHS did begin our Pool Testing Protocol on Monday, December 3. We are doing this testing weekly on Monday mornings. There are two Monday holidays for the rest of the school year - Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Memorial Day - we will test on Tuesdays in these two weeks since there will not be school on Monday.
Below you will find a link to the consent form. This sign-up process should take no more than 5 minutes for you to complete using a computer or a smartphone. Pre-Screening Tool for School Attendance
As we enter the cold and flu season, please make sure you are considering this pre-screening tool daily before sending your child to school.
While we are seeing more Covid cases right now, please be careful and safe. Take good care of each other!
