Comet Connection
February Edition
Message from the Principal
Greetings Britt Family,
Happy February. As the shortest month, February is flying by. Early Release Conferences are coming up from February 28 through March 3. Teachers have sent home letters about how to sign-up for these conferences. You can expect to hear how your child is progressing on grade level AKS/standards at these conferences, so they are very important to us. Below, you will find a link to GCPS's promotion requirements for each grade so you can familiarize yourself with them. March 1 and 2 will be early release days that week. School is out at 12:50, so students will be home early on those days.
I need your help. Even though it is February, we are already planning for next year. As a part of this, I would like to hear your opinion about how we can make Britt a better place for your child and yourself. Below this note is a survey link to a few open-ended questions. Please take a few minutes to answer these before February 22. I will be working with a team of staff and community members to help incorporate your feedback into our planning for next year.
As we head toward Spring Break, we have many things going on. So check out our calendar for our subsequent events, and I look forward to seeing you there.
Warmest regards,
Melissa Madsen

You are invited to attend a LUNCH & LEARN session called Stress Management for Kids, presented by the school counselors and parent coordinator.
During the 40-minute workshop, you will LEARN how to teach healthy coping skills to manage feelings and handle stress. Teaching your children healthy coping strategies will help them become more resilient (better able to handle life’s ups and downs). Furthermore, several of the coping skills provided are things children already enjoy doing. Afterward, you can have LUNCH with your child in the school cafeteria.
This workshop is being offered two different times. Select the day and time best for you.
Where: Britt Elementary Asteroid Room (near the school office)

Career Day on March 3-- We Need Your Help
Britt Elementary is preparing for its annual Career Day on Friday, March 3, 2023 from 9:00 am-2:00 pm. We are soliciting various presenters/career speakers to discuss their professions (Interest, education requirements, etc…) for Career Day. We ask that each staff member invite a community member or a family member to speak to our students about their profession; we encourage speakers to bring job-related visuals for the 25-minute rotating classroom presentation. Please allow time within your 25 minutes for a question answer session in the classroom. We ask the presenter to arrive by 8:30 a.m. for a special welcome and continental breakfast and stay until 2:00 p.m. If they are unable to stay the entire time that is perfectly fine, speakers only available for a specific time please indicate that in the linked sign-up genius. Letters will also go home with students- if parents or community members prefer to complete a hard copy and return to the school counseling department.
We would like to offer our children inspiration, guidance and knowledge to prepare them for the future, please help our career day be a huge success. Please share/use the link to sign-up as a presenter https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0948AEAA2AAAF9C25-career
Square1Art Fundraiser for Art Class
This year I am participating in a fundraiser that is a “win-win” for you and for your child’s art class here at Britt Elementary. The company is called Square1Art and they make wonderful keepsakes out of your child’s artwork. You can learn more about the company and see their products by visiting https://shop.square1art.com/shop .
We have been working hard in class to complete the art that I will send to Square1Art. Original artwork will be returned to me at a later date. The company will photograph the work to create an individualized catalog of the many different keepsakes that are available for you to buy. Catalogs will go home with your child the week of February 6 and will include free stickers with your child’s art. You can purchase keepsakes directly online, and items will be shipped to your house. Proceeds from the sales will go to Britt Elementary art. It’s that easy!
I am very excited about this fundraiser. It’s a great way to capture a time period in your child’s life and support our art class.
