PBIS Assembly

This Thursday we celebrated our 4th Quarter PBIS Assembly. PBIS is our Positive Behavior In School program, and our assemblies include drawing students for recognition of positive choices. We also recognized our IXL Honor Roll Students (See Below). For the remainder of the year, students can place their Golden Paws in buckets for special gift certificates to places like Planet Sub, Smoothie King, or Dunkin Donuts. These will be drawn throughout the coming weeks until the end of the year as we continue to support positive student choices.

IXL Honor Roll

Congratulation to our IXL Honor Roll students who were recognized Thursday for their efforts both in and out of the classroom to use this support tool to grow their math and reading skills. Our top 3 students were Wyatt, Abe, and Jericho, and received special medals in recognition of their extra efforts. In addition, the top 10 students who had mastered the most skills in each grade level received a certificate and Smoothie King gift certificate for their hard work. Keep up the great work and remember that IXL will also be available to students and families during the summer months.

Rockbrook PBIS - Positive Behavior In School - Family Survey

Dear Rockbrook Families,

Our school is in its third formal year of implementing the PBIS or Positive Behavior in School system of supports. You may have seen articles in our newsletters or attended presentations on PBIS during our Curriculum and Engagement Night early in the year or heard about it from your child, such as their receiving a Power Paw, Golden Paw, Bingo, or being drawn at an assembly. Reinforcement of positive behavior is seen as the best way to shape our student and our school culture.

We would greatly appreciate your feedback on how this process is going and your family's understanding of PBIS. Please take a moment to complete the following survey either on your own or with your child. Your input will help us to continue to plan for the coming year and to continue to support our school.

Rockbrook Staffing Updates

Dear Rockbrook Families,

As you may have heard the district is adjusting the way they will be staffing Counselors and Psychologists in our Elementary Schools. More information on this can be found below. I also wanted to let you know how this will impact Rockbrook and your child for the coming year.

Next year Rockbrook will have a full-time combination School Psychologist and School Counselor. Mrs. Rosol, our current School Psychologist will be moving with her family due to her husband’s position with the Navy. Mrs. Martin will be sharing her talents with the students and staff at Westbrook Elementary as a classroom teacher. Mrs. Martin began connecting with students and classes this week and Mrs. Rosol is doing similarly with students she works closely with.

After reading the further explanation below, please let me know if you have any questions regarding how our Social Emotional supports and services will look in the coming year. We are sad to have these two amazing members of our team leaving, but wish them well in the new adventures that await them.

Westside Innovates with School-Based Social-Emotional & Mental Health Services Delivered by Full-Time School Psychologists

For the coming school year several district elementaries, including Rockbrook will take a unique and innovative approach to the delivery of social-emotional learning and counseling services. Under this new model, our school psychologist will serve Rockbrook full time and fulfill the roles of both school counselor and school psychologist. Like counselors, school psychologists are highly trained in delivering interventions that meet the mental, behavioral and social-emotional needs of all learners, as well as in assessing and intervening upon student behavioral needs and identifying student disabilities within the school. Our school psychologist will provide counseling curriculum and instruction in the classrooms, support general education teachers in delivering the social-emotional learning curriculum, facilitate the social-emotional screening process, support educators with data analysis and decision making around interventions, deliver interventions in a 1:1 or small group, and consult with classroom teachers, administrators and parents. While this is a change in staffing, this model ensures that each school has a consistent and full-time professional engaged with the vision and mission of a single school, which is good for the connectedness, consistency, and quality of services. Westside Community Schools will continue to provide high-quality counseling services and supports that meet the social, emotional and behavioral needs and learnings of students across the district. Thank you for your continued partnership.

By law, all incoming 7th graders must present evidence of having a complete physical examination, updated immunizations (Tdap is required by state law), and a dental exam prior to entering school. For missing immunizations, state law allows us to accept only valid medical exemption forms, signed by a physician or notarized religious exemption forms. A signed waiver form from parents/guardian refusing to provide physical exam documentation is also required. All forms are available from the District’s ABC Welcome Center.

Physicians may print out results of the physical exam and immunizations on their forms, or parents may print the 7th grade health physical exam form from the WMS website found in the “Health Information” area. Exams must be completed anytime after March 1, 2019, and before school starts in the Fall. Students planning to participate in sports must have a physical dated after May 1, 2019.

If your child has a chronic condition such as asthma, diabetes, or epilepsy, a health action plan is required. Asthma action plans must be completed and signed by a doctor and may be found on the WMS website in the “Health Information” area or picked up from the WMS main office. I will be checking my email periodically during the summer. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Melissa Smith, or contact the main office at WMS for general information.
