SCOT NATION: AT A GLANCE
August 12th-18th
GEAR UP HOSTS FIRST FRESHMAN EXPERIENCE & FRESHMAN SUNDAY
All Faculty and Staff are invited to fellowship with our Freshmen and their Families from 2:00-5:00pm.
FRESHMAN ORIENTATION: MONDAY AUGUST 14TH, 2017
Please get rooms ready for the first day/week of school.
First set of lesson plans are due in the Google Shared Folder along with syllabus on or before the end of day, Friday, August 18th.
Para I's-We will need your assistance in making contacts with parents of students who HAVE NOT PRE-ENROLLED! We currently show about 150 students who potentially could show up on the first day or two expecting a schedule, but have not pre-enrolled. Mrs. Ramirez-Johnson will have your list for you to call, or we may need your assistance in helping with the enrollment process.
Para II's-With Freshmen who have special needs being in the building for the first day, please be of assistance with the Link Crew to provide the additional resource supports as they transition through their first day of school. PI's please make sure we introduce our students to the Para II's who will be working with them.
COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Schedule Problems-If there are holes in schedules, the counselors will be in the cafeteria on Monday to help distribute schedules and make immediate corrections if there are HOLES, BUT NOT CHANGE REQUESTS.
On Tuesday, they will be in the South Gym with schedule distribution for those who do not yet have a physical copy of their schedule or lost it the day before.
Schedule Change Request Forms-Students will be able to complete a Schedule Change Request Form, but those changes WILL NOT be made immediately, or possibly even at all. Students will follow the schedules as printed until they are given an amended version. Deadline for requests is Thursday, August 17th at 3:00pm.
Counselors have the option to make adjustments following this date if it has been discussed with the teacher and administrator, but this is not ideal. Typically, this would occur when a student is in over his/her head with coursework.
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL: AUGUST 15TH..A New Beginning
Morning Procedure: All students will be required to enter the North Gym/Cafeteria Doors (EACH MORNING). Students will then either eat breakfast or go to the gym and sit in assigned grade level section. Students eating breakfast can remain in the cafeteria as long as they are not disruptive after eating or they may choose to join their classmates in the gym.
At 7:38am we will release a grade level to the main building for classes, and continue this until all students have been released from the gym and cafeteria.
Teachers will be expected to greet students in the hallway at 7:38am. Administrators, counselors, social workers, hallway monitors will supervise the cafeteria and gym along with Para II's who are on contract and begin escorting the students into the main building.
One SRO will be in the parking lot each morning while the other will be in the holding areas until 7:35 where he will then stand in the Common Area encouraging students to be on time to class.
Once the school year is underway, when you need students for clubs, tutoring, etc. It is essential that you provide a pass for students to enter the main building prior to 7:38am. This is important to keep halls clear.
BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS, ROUTINES, PROCEDURES, & EXPECTATIONS
Be mindful of establishing a climate of mutual respect as it is your classroom, but the classroom environment belongs to all of you.
SEMINAR TIME: SCOT TIME
Please share the mission statement with students and the process to create it. Use time to memorize it along with the students while defining the words. What does the mission mean to them?
The first month will be students with you during Scot Time. Once we get procedures down and hallways clear we can provide rotations or a sampling of items where students can attend for either tutorial or enrichment in an area of interest.
Great time to discuss NCAA Clearing House, Kansas Scholars, sharing of types of clubs and other organizations to get involved with to increase student engagement for all at HPHS, get students signed up on Edgenuity, study tips and techniques, time management, conflict resolution, etc.
HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE...
Grapevine Issues:
1) I don't want to use Remind for communication with Mrs. Perry, as it uses up my data on my phone and I don't have an unlimited data plan or texting.
A-No problem, feel free to not enroll in Remind or remove yourself from the list. I will send the same information through school e-mail, as well. Communication was something that appeared on the Keep, Change, Delete Survey and I want the esteemed faculty and staff to be informed.
2) Does Mrs. Perry know our contract times?
A-Yes, I do. The PD Dates and times given to me were from 8:00-4:00 each day and on the day of Convocation the start time was 8:30am. I realize there were occassions where we wen over up to 10 minutes due to the conversation and discussion of the staff. Please remember that I am not offended if you leave at the end of your contract day. Many did step out for need to pick-up children and other obligations.
Lastly, we are ordering Suggestion Boxes to get additional input from those who are less comfortable with a face-to-face meeting as we also welcome your suggestions.
As we build relationships with one another, we will all find our way of what works best as we all aim to do what is right for our students.
