Central Avenue Elementary

Tonya Middling - Principal

Kristin Hillius - Assistant Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

As we accept our new reality and settle into better routines with learning behaviors, I want to take a moment to sincerely thank you for the incredible job you are doing at home to ensure your child stays engaged and connected at school. This week, I've completed several observations and was so pleased to see students showing up on time, everyday, ready to learn during their assigned cohort synchronous instruction! We know it's been a tough 7 weeks. Please read through this newsletter for important updates and resources that are available. If you have any other needs we can assist with, please let us know by emailing me at tmiddling@fpschools.org.

I am also excited to inform you that we are in the process of piloting a different conferencing platform that will provide higher quality audio and video. We know how incredibly important it is to ensure students can see and hear instruction and we are grateful to our IT department for helping identify a new tool that will be an improvement from our current conferencing tool, Big Blue Button. Stay tuned for a shift later in November!

On Monday and Tuesday, we will welcome back our students that receive services through our Support Center Program. We are thrilled to be able to serve students in person in small groups according to current Department of Health guidelines! It gives us hope for more students returning after COVID numbers start to decline.

School pictures took place this week too, and if you missed out, don't worry! We'll have picture retakes in December!

Sunday is daylight savings, so don't forget to turn back your clock an hour and remember to VOTE!

Stay safe and healthy,

~Mrs. Middling

Attendance

As a reminder, Asynchronous Wednesdays are not "days off" from school. Teachers work hard to plan activities that students can do independently on these days. On Wednesdays, there is not an assigned time with their teacher, but attendance is taken by work completed. If your student hasn't logged on to Canvas at all on Wednesday, they will be marked absent. This counts towards their total unexcused absences.

On regular days, when students are not with their live teacher, they should attend specialist (music or library). Some students also have other groups, such as Resource Room, ELL, or LAP. All students should do their assigned homework during this time. As always, if you have questions about your child's learning, please call or email their teacher. If your child will be absent, please remember to call the school so we can excuse the absence.

Hybrid Learning Update

We will continue to plan carefully so that we are prepared to make the transition to hybrid learning when the timing is right. In order to minimize the amount of stress that students and staff have to endure, we will wait to transition to hybrid learning until we are confident that case numbers are stable and will offer a minimum of a two week transition period between announcing our plan and opening our schools.

Thank you all for your patience and persistence during this season of unknowns. Many indicators suggest that this pandemic is not going to go away quickly. Please know that the health and safety of staff and students is our top priority as we consider the road ahead.

Please visit FPSD for the most up to date information regarding Hybrid Learning.
