FROM THE LITERACY CORNER
In these cold months of winter, it is a perfect time to find a cozy spot and read or listen to a story. Whether your child is in PreK or 5th grade, this is a great way to connect and take a few minutes to unwind at the end of your day.
In honor of World Read Aloud Day on February 7th, one way to engage your child is by listening to books read aloud by their authors, here are few wonderful resources that include authors reading their books aloud:
From Our Reading Curriculum at Columbia Teachers College

Annual Student Health Screenings
As a reminder, all Massachusetts students are required to have in-school health screenings annually unless written request from parent/guardian to decline screening is received for the current school year. In this case, parents/guardians must provide documentation of alternate recent screening done by student’s health care provider. Screenings are ongoing throughout the school year.
Vision- grades PK, K, 1, 2, 3
Hearing- grades K, 1, 2, 3
BMI- 1, 4
Postural - grade 5
Physical Forms
Every student entering school needs to present documentation of a physical examination and then every 3-4 years after. If participating in competitive sports, physical forms are required annually. If you have not sent in an updated physical for your student, we ask that you please do so in a timely manner. You can send in a paper copy, email the school nurses, or have your pediatrician fax it.
Being Prepared with Extra Clothing
Students of all ages will occasionally need a clothing change in school due to getting wet on the playground, food/drink spills, bathroom accidents, clothing malfunctions, etc. Please provide your student with extra clothing that can be kept in their locker just in case an unexpected need arises.
Questions?
Please check out the Carver Elementary Health Office Webpage for answers to many commonly asked questions about your child’s school heath.
Meet Carver's Drug Free Communities Grant Coordinator
Meghan Quirke, Drug Free Communities Grant Coordinator Town of Carver, Carver Cares Coalition
Hello! I’m Meghan Quirke and I just recently started in this new role for the Town of Carver in October. My background includes twenty years in the field of Health and Human Services, with the last eight years working in a neighboring school district as a Family Resource Coordinator.
The goal of my position as DFC Grant Coordinator will focus on the prevention of youth substance use; with the hope that over time, initiatives implemented in partnership with Carver Cares Coalition will also cause a decrease in substance misuse among adults.

HALF WAY THERE! 90TH DAY OF SCHOOL
Exciting News for 4th and 5th grade Families
In the next year or two, your child will be entering middle school and so we wanted to invite you to attend our inaugural Student Showcase, which will feature students in grades 8-12 sharing projects they are working on at Carver Middle High School.
Many of these projects are a result of our focus on Project-Based Learning. At Carver Middle High School, students hear a lot about the exciting classes we offer in our Pathways Program. Students in our Pathways take a series of classes that help prepare them for careers and college majors in different categories including:
Biotechnology
Computer Science
Culinary/Hospitality
Environmental and Agricultural Sciences
Health and Wellness
Manufacturing Engineering Technology
Visual Performing Arts
That evening, you will also have the opportunity to check out our TV studio, the renovations on our new culinary kitchen, our amazing technology Makerspace, and our new greenhouse! These are all amazing spaces that you can learn and grow in when you start as a student here so we are excited for you to get a sneak peek now and interact with our amazing students who will be showcasing what they are learning. Families in attendance can also enter a drawing for free Carver Swag!
Please be on the lookout for a special invitation coming to you in the mail with additional information. We look forward to seeing you there!
Sincerely,
Christine Cabral, Principal
Carver Middle High School

Important School Attendance Information
Your child’s school attendance matters, and we want them here with us everyday! Our teachers are working diligently to create warm, welcoming environments and build positive relationships so that your child wants and feels a sense of belonging at CES. Bright futures begin with good school attendance.
We will continue to provide regular communication regarding attendance that may be helpful to you.

Year at a Glance
Canine Reading Program
Canine Reading
CES has a reader dog program. The goal of the program is to help strengthen reading skills and improve children's relationship with reading. Reader Dog is typically held on Fridays for an hour with grade 2 and grade 3 students. Students pair together to read to the dogs with the handler present. The student readers are introduced to the dog and can interact with them as they read. All the CES Reader Dogs are highly trained to be a reading buddy as students get comfortable and read aloud to the dogs. Benefits of reading and interacting with dogs are increased confidence, reduced anxiety, improved reading skills. See the pictures below to get a glimpse of the Canine Reading Program.
GRADE 3 BOTTLE PROJECTS
As a culmination of the non-fiction reading unit, third grade students are working on a biography project of a historical figure who has made a positive impact on the world. The bottle person was an at-home, creative project, made by students and their families. The third grade team is so proud of their talented students!
MRS. SWANTON AND MS. SIMMONS' CLASSES HIKING THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL
Mrs. Swanton and Ms. Simmons' Classes participated in Appalachian Trail day celebrations. Specialists at CES threw confetti and pop poppers for the students as they walked through to simulate the Trail day held in Damascus Virginia to celebrate Appalachian Trail hikers. These classes have taken a virtual Appalachian Trail hike all year, adding miles and learning about the areas that they hike through. They are in Virginia right now.
