Principal’s Message

Hello Knight Families,

As we begin a new term, we have many successes to be proud of and many things to look forward to. Congratulations to all of our students making the Honor Roll and Principal’s List. Their hard work is to be commended, especially under the challenging circumstances we have endured this school year. However, I know that it would not have been possible without parental support and, of course, our amazing teachers.

Our Winter sports teams are in full swing and have been representing us well. Thank you for your support in continuing to ensure our student-athletes are following safety mitigations so that we can complete our winter season without postponements or cancellations.

We are excited to host our Term 2 Virtual open house on Tuesday, February 9, at 6:30 PM. Please be sure to check out this issue of the Knightly News for schedule information and links to live meetings with your student’s term 2 teachers.

On February 23, we will welcome back all of our option 1 students to The Castle! I would encourage you to check out the videos included in this issue of the Knightly News so that your student is aware of the safety mitigations we have in place.

This month we celebrated Ms. Amy Pratt for Student Activities Day and our School Counseling team for National Counseling Week. Please be sure to give them a shout out when you have a chance as they truly work hard to make Kellam High School the best at the beach!

Congratulations to all of our student athletes who committed to a college or university on National Signing Day! We are proud of them. Also, we recognized our winter sports senior athletes and you can view that recognition for free on the NFHS network. We have several virtual activities planned for Black History month and will also celebrate Love Kellam Week February 8 - 12! Please encourage your students to get involved in at least one of the activities we have planned as we work to restore our sense of community while we are apart.

We continue to stand ready to support your students whether they are transitioning back to the building this month or have decided to remain virtual. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your student’s teacher, counselor, or administrator should you require assistance. I’m looking forward to an awesome second term and to a time where we are able to once again see each other in person.

Celebrating Black History/American History

Black History Month should be enjoyed by ALL Americans. Only in the United States of America could people arrive here in chains and later rise to the ranks of leader (President Obama) and vice leader (Vice President Harris) of this great country.

This month, Kellam High School is celebrating Black History Month by presenting various activities for all students. It is our hope that students will gain a better understanding of the contributions of African Americans to our country and the world. Prizes will be awarded to the students who participate at a high level in each of these activities. But more importantly, we hope that a sense of community will be formed from the exposure to these activities.

Truth and knowledge of the past can bring us together. Most Americans know very little about African American/ Black history. Who was the African American inventor, best known for creating the world's very first cell phone? In 1770, what black man became the first casualty of the American Revolution when he was shot and killed in what became known as the Boston Massacre?

There are many facts that when examined could have the power to change or improve the perception of how African Americans have been viewed in the context of American History. To truly celebrate the greatness of our country, we must embrace the diversity that makes it that way. The time has come to open our eyes and hearts to our past, our present, and the future we should all want for this place we call home.
