We have hired Genny Berg in Special Ed to replace Raquele Manke, who moved to North Carolina. Genny was with us part-time for the second half of the 2015-2016 school year. We welcome her back as a full-time teacher. Mary Pawasarat, will join us in first grade. Mary was at the Urban Day School for 11 years (it unfortunately closed at the end of this year) and impressed the hiring team with her child-focused responses to our toughest questions, and she was engaging and at ease when presenting a lesson to a group of our students. Her references spoke with the highest regard about Mary’s skills, knowledge, and disposition. Welcome, Mary! We are pleased also that our part-time Phy Ed teacher, Hannah Millicovsky, will be back at McKinley this fall. We will share Hannah with Montessori. She is pleased to be returning.
The Mascot Question
Since I have been principal, several parents, teachers, and students have come to me requesting that we change the mascot. Mr. Carter also informed me when I came on that it had been a topic of conversation that I would probably need to address in time. Some would like an updated image; while others have pressed for a totally new mascot.
I have been researching and have come up with a vague sketch of the history of the mascot. Any additional information would be appreciated.
Several sources claim that the original McKinley mascot was the Muskie. (I have been unable to locate any images of this, but I wonder if parents or families with a McKinley history have something with that image—if so, please send me a snapshot.)
It appears to me in going through the archives that in approximately 1988-89 the mascot changed to a Mountie. See below for the image (1) that emerged at that time:
Then in 2004 for the 75th anniversary of the school the Mountie changed to the current mascot. See below for this image (2).
Because of the negative responses that I have heard from so many parents and students, I have avoided using the current mascot on much since I have come to McKinley and instead have used the McKinley Arch logo when an image is required. See below for this image (3).
I have volunteers willing to help work on creating a new image; however, before moving forward on this I would like your input.
