A Peek at Our Week

Math Goal: Number Writing

Last week Barnacle Bart visited our class to introduce our newest math goal: reading and writing our numbers from 0-30. We have been reviewing those tricky teens, as well as practicing the numbers from 20-30. To practice this math goal, we have played many math games over the last few weeks. As a fun treat, we even used shaving cream on the tables and practiced writing our numbers in the shaving cream. Try having your child find numbers around the house to practice reading and writing numbers up to 30!

Narrative Writing Celebration!

This week our class wrapped up our study of narrative writing by publishing our final "true story" pieces! The students in our class have been working hard all year to tell true stories during writer's workshop time. As storytellers, we've tried to make sure our story has a beginning, middle, and end.

When we came back from winter vacation, we took some time to review what would make our writing "easy to read." We decided that adding details to our pictures and words is so helpful! Other things include using finger spaces, printing our letters neatly (and using lowercase when appropriate), and adding punctuation and labels all help make it easy for readers to read our writing. We still encourage our Kindergarten writers to stretch out words and write the sounds we hear, but to also start using words we know from our word wall to spell some things the correct way. Congratulations to our amazing authors!

Learning about Martin Luther King Jr.

Before the long weekend, we took some time to talk about Martin Luther King Jr. and his role in the history of our country. We talked about how there used to be some very unfair laws in our country, and how Dr. King worked hard to change those laws. We read several books about his life and watched a short video from our Scholastic magazine website. Our class drew portraits of Dr. King and talked about our dreams for a bright future!
