A glimpse into your child's past week! February 5

What We're Up To:

The kids have grown accustomed to short weeks, making this week a difficult transition back to normalcy. We continue to conduct student-led Morning Meetings to help improve behavior and build a sense of community, and have recently begun to take brain breaks throughout the day using GoNoodle.

I am very concerned about the amount of missing work students have currently (we have 4 grades at this point, and many kids are missing all 4 assignments). I am enlisting in your help to log in and check your child's grades WITH them and remind them of the importance (and ramifications) for not completing assigned school work. We have had many conversations about this (I honestly don't grade a whole lot to begin with) so hopefully hearing the same message from you at home will help the importance sink in. The time you invest in helping to establish good work habits at the third grade level will do nothing but HELP your child as they move into the higher grades and the demand increases. In order to make this happen, I need your help.

ALSO, we REALLY are in need of pencils. As soon as I put out a handful they are gone. The kids have cleared me out of 50 pencils in just one day, and I'm now out. I've asked them to bring in their own for their own personal use. I think that if they have to bring in their own they will probably keep better track of them. Thank you!

Valentine's Day

We will celebrate Valentine's Day in our classroom on Thursday, February 11th at 3:00. Students are encouraged to bring in a valentine for every student in the class. There are 26 kids in our class. A red class list came home two weeks ago in the Friday Folder.

In addition to exchanging valentines, we will be enjoying ice cream sundaes to celebrate our mastery of our multiplication facts. Thank you to all of you who have signed up to donate time and/or supplies to make this a great "party" for the kids. (Please sent donations to school by TUESDAY!)

A valentine box will not be necessary for the students, as we will be decorating Valentine bags that morning. Your child can bring their valentines to school on Thursday to pass out to their classmates.

Students completed the well-love Science Court activity this week and we also took part in Sound Centers. We wrapped up the week with our District Sound Test on Friday. Scores can be found in ParentVUE and StudentVUE.

We will now transition to learning about MOTION for the next few weeks.

In Social Studies we've wrapped up our study of Native Americans and early settlers in Michigan. Students played some games to review and we took our District Social Studies test in class on Thursday. The students did VERY well on their Test, including answering a question that involved a long (typed!) response. They will do quite a bit of this on the M-STEP (state assessment) in the Spring, so it was great to see that they are on the right track for success with that.


In Math we completed Topic 8 and students will be taking their Mid-Year Math Assessment on Monday and Tuesday. There will not be a Topic 8 Test, as I feel that these poor kids have been tested WAY TOO MUCH! We will begin Topic 9, a unit on Fractions, mid week. A new Homework Packet will come home then.

The February Reflex Challenge (a pink sheet located in your child's binder) should be returned on February 29, the last day of the month. A surprise treat is included with the return of this packet, ON TIME!!! (22 students out of 26 completed January's multiplication packet!!!)

Students brought home a new Reading Log on Wednesday. It is a completely different format/task than reading logs in the past. Just like in the past, one will be due each week on Wednesday. We spent quite a bit of time on Thursday and Friday practicing how to complete the *new* weekly reading log.


In Writing we completed our Realistic Fiction stories and students turned them in Tuesday afternoon. We will now begin to learn how to research!
