Message from the SIG Chair
Dear Eisner SIG Members,
As you are probably aware, the program for the 2017 AERA Annual Meeting in San Antonio is now online. We are pleased to offer thought-provoking and cutting edge sessions centered on Eisner’s ideas.
In addition to our sessions, the Eisner SIG is thrilled to be featuring Dr. Stephen Thornton at our business meeting, which is Saturday, April 29 from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm. Professor Thornton studied with Elliot Eisner at Stanford University and has utilized many of his ideas in his ongoing research. Dr. Thornton is also co-editor of The Curriculum Studies Reader with David Flinders, which has recently been released in its fifth edition. More can be found about Stephen below.
The Eisner SIG also enjoys its social time! We are pleased once again to assist in sponsoring the Arts and Learning SIG party. The event will be Saturday night, April 29, from 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm in the Briar's Suite of Pat O’Brien’s. Details below.
Finally, thank you EE SIG members for your commitment to this SIG and what it represents. The EE SIG is eclectic to its core, a combination of interests from qualitative and arts-based research to an arts and humanistically-oriented curriculum that pays attention to teacher and student nuance. Regarding art itself, Eisner said it best:
"The Arts are fundamental resources through which the world is viewed, meaning is created, and the mind developed. To neglect the contribution of the Arts in education, either through inadequate time, resources, or poorly trained teachers, is to deny children access to one of the most stunning aspects of their culture and one of the most potent means for developing their minds." I look forward to seeing you in San Antonio.
Best Wishes,
Bruce Uhrmacher

"In this fifth edition of David J. Flinders and Stephen J. Thornton’s ground-breaking anthology, the editors assemble the best in past and present curriculum studies scholarship. From John Dewey’s nineteenth-century creed to Nel Noddings’ provocative twenty-first-century analysis of the Common Core, this thoughtful combination of well-recognized and pivotal work provides a complete survey of the discipline, coupled with concrete examples of innovative curriculum and an examination of current topics. New to this edition is a dynamic set of contemporary contributions tackling issues such as gender, sexuality, race, and ecology in curriculum scholarship and practice, as well as an additional historical piece from Paulo Freire."
