First Full Week!
We are fully in the swing of things around here. The students seem to have settled in with their new teachers and classmates. They are doing a great job being wonderful Coyote citizens.
The Boosterthon Fun Run is our main fundraiser for the year. All students received a fundraising brochure on Tuesday and should be collecting pledges for the Fun Run. Thank you for your support as we raise money to help our LC students.
By now, all car riders should have received yellow signs for the parent pick up line. If you did not receive one, please contact the office.
STAR testing begins next week for students in grades 4 and 5. Grades 2 & 3 will be the week of Labor Day, with 1st grade the week after.
Please help us keep all children safe. We need to follow procedure for drop off and pick up. Slow down. Pay attention to signs and crossing guards. Cross only at the crosswalks. No cell phone use please. There is no left turn from Lakewood Creek Drive into the parking lot for the car line. Also, no street parking where there is a yellow curb.

AVID Focus
WICOR is part of the AVID Schoolwide Instruction, and is an acronym for Writing to learn, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading to learn.
This week's Coyote Call will address the W in WICOR, Writing to Learn.
The focus of Writing to Learn is to not only write, but to USE their writing. This writing is used in all subject areas as a way to engage students in higher level thinking, make connections, reflect, explore, problem solve, retain learning, and more. This is a very different strategy than Learning to Write.
Writing to Learn also encompasses note-taking, journaling, quickwrites, one pagers, using word banks, sentence frames, learning logs. Two and three-column notes are examples of structured forms of note-taking. Student assignment notebooks are not only an organizational tool, but also incorporate writing, as students can include what they learned in each subject area. They can use the Lesson Objective to reflect on their own level of content mastery. Notes are a way to refresh memory and help transfer concepts from short to long-term memory. Research has shown that those who take notes by hand, as opposed to using a laptop, have better understanding and can more easily apply and integrate new learning.
At home strategy: Try a One Pager!
Children summarize learning or a concept with a graphic and text representation. This could be an image or idea from a read aloud. Have your child draw the setting or character, and include words from the text to describe the picture.
