MPS Update
Superintendent Haas ~ June 17, 2022
Congratulations on 2021-2022
As Monday is a holiday, we have one final half-day, on Tuesday and then summer vacation is in full swing.
Our senior class of 2022 was an incredible class and has grown into such wonderful young men and women. This was so evident at graduation when their speeches were some of the best ever. They were so personalized and meaningful to the students and their families.
Our grade 8 Fowler students will be graduating on Tuesday as they prepare to move on to the high school.
Our third-grade students 'graduated' with a graduation ceremony and clap-off Friday morning.
Congratulations to all our students and staff for all of their accomplishments.
Enjoy celebrating Father's Day this weekend and I hope you have a wonderful summer!
Best,
Brian Haas
Superintendent
Juneteenth
Sunday, June 19 marks Juneteenth, a state and federal holiday. As explained in more detail in this resource from the National Museum of African American History & Culture, Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 that federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce the emancipation of enslaved people and the end of the Civil War. Teaching and learning about Juneteenth is an important way to deepen students’ understanding of slavery’s legacy. The following resources offer a helpful starting point:
- Learning for Justice offers information and instructional tips, emphasizing that “lessons about Juneteenth need to recognize the challenges those who fight injustice have always faced” as well as “jubilant celebrations of culture [and] activism.”
- Teach for America’s website includes a video discussion about the importance of Juneteenth and of culturally responsive teaching more generally, as well as a variety of resources about the holiday.
- PBS has a short video intended for elementary school students explaining what Juneteenth is and why and how it is celebrated.

Athletic Information 2022-2023
As you may know we are currently hiring a full-time athletic director for the 2022-2023 school year. This is an exciting opportunity for Maynard Athletics. If your child is playing a fall sport, please encourage them to stay active and fit for the fall season! Champions are made in the offseason! If you have general questions, about this information you can reach out to Kevin Caruso @ kcaruso@maynard.k12.ma.us. If you have sports specific questions feel reach to out the head coach of that particular sport. Names and emails are below.
Please pay special attention to the Physical requirement as this will be emphasized this year. Physicals are only valid for 13 months to the date of the last exam and current ones must be on file with the school nurse.
Return to play protocols related to a COVID and concussion diagnosis will also be enforced. Please see the registration form for this information.
The following are three important initial eligibility requirements to participate in a sport for next year.
1. Current Physicals: Physicals are good for exactly 13 months to the day. Over the summer, you can send your physicals to the high school to the nurse’s attention.
2. Activity Fees: Activity fees must be paid prior to the start of the season. Waivers and scholarships are available. Waivers for Fowler students can be sent to Fowler Principal and HS scholarship applications will be available this summer. Please see the link for the activity fee information. https://core-docs.s3.amazonaws.com/documents/asset/uploaded_file/1563375/Student_Activity_Fee.pdf
Checks should be made out to Maynard Public Schools and sent to 3-R Tiger Drive.
3. Registration: This is now an online process. Use the following link for the one-time per year registration for all three seasons. Note, this registration process is for Maynard sponsored sports. Co-op sports in which Maynard is not the host, will require additional registration with the host school. Registration is important so you receive the latest information.
