This Week @ PS 88Q

October 23, 2022

A Message From Mrs. O'Shaughnessy

I hope everyone had a wonderful week and got to enjoy the beautiful weather on Saturday. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the weather is just as nice for our Outdoor Family Movie Night on Friday! So far it is looking good. We can't wait to see our families return for a night of fun, socializing, meeting other families, and enjoying our "Walk In" Movie Theater. Bring you chairs, your picnic blankets, and your family. Our PTA is sponsoring the second Caring Closet as well in our small school yard that night, so please come and take what you need.

This summer, and throughout the next few months (and years) PS 88Q continues to make improvements to our beautiful building. Some you can see, others you can't. We were not chosen to host Summer Rising this past summer because of the enormous amount of work going on, and continues to go on. Below is a video of our gym makeover. Ms. Corniel and Mr. Tripotseris's classroom! As you can see, from the lighting, the floor renewal (and our school logo), remote control shades, and now, full padding around the walls, this space is not only aesthetically beautiful, but safer for our student athletes! Everyone who knows me, knows I am a true basketball mom. This space to some is just a gym, but to my daughter this is where she finds her comfort zone. She has spent countless hours in gyms just like this, training, practicing and playing basketball. From age 4 to now (21) and now a senior D2 College Athlete at Caldwell University, this is where she found her passion. We have many students who feel the same. On days when they get to see Ms. Corniel and Mr. Tripotseris, they look forward to being in the gym. Our physical education teachers create many opportunities for all students to thrive. Our students learn in every area of our school, and during these elementary years, some find their passion. For some it is music, others art, some STEM and for some, it is athletics. We look forward this year to increasing opportunities for our student athletes to thrive as well. The past two years were filled with strict covid regulations, but this year, they have been relaxed. Stay tuned for opportunities for our students to explore their athletic ability this year. Additionally, the playground for PS 88Q is in the final stage before construction begins. As the blueprints show, we will have a turf field, athletic track, and basketball hoops. We are already planning on incorporating this into our vision. Who knows, we may have the next NBA or WNBA all star, or marathon runner or soccer star!

Student Council 2022-2023

Things are starting to heat up here at PS 88Q, as we get closer to our Election Day (Monday November 7th). Our candidates are busy campaigning, making posters, planning their speeches and listening to the students. We met this week to discuss the campaign process. Wow! What good questions they had. These leaders are ready for the task. Over the next two weeks, they will hang their campaign posters, record their messages (if they like) with the help of Mr. Canales, and write their speeches (which I will be helping). Our candidates took to the intercom this week to introduce themselves as well. Public Speaking 101!

Gifted and Talented @ PS88Q

We were very excited to be chosen by our Superintendent, Dr. Chan, to host a first year initiative from our Mayor and Chancellor, the grade 3 gifted ant talented program. We have welcomed new students to our school, as well as our previous PS 88q students. This week, our Gifted and Talented team, including me, took part in an all day learning session with other teams who are hosting this new program. It was wonderful to develop the cities vision, and work with others. Here are some of the takeaways:

  • Our G and T class continues to use the same curriculum as all our classes, but we emphasis project based learning and increased critical thinking.
  • The methodologies used in our G and T are also implemented in ALL of our classes, because all children learn best this way.
  • We are following the Design Principles for Schools: Putting the Science of Learning and Development into action. https://k12.designprinciples.org/
  • These practices are also the goal in ALL CLASSES
  • Our grade 3 will transition to grade 4 next year, (and grade 5 the following year)and we will welcome a new grade 3 G and T for the 2023-2024 SY

If you have any questions regarding the gifted and talented program, please feel free to reach out anytime.
