Ahoy Navigator Parents!


Hope you are off to a great weekend! As you can see, we are gearing up for our Negley 5K races! Please consider entering - it is a fundraiser for our PTA which then goes directly to our school, the classrooms and teachers, then ultimately impacting your child! If your child wants a t-shirt (or you) Monday is the last day to register as a "sleepwalker" and get that shirt! As always, thank you for supporting our PTA!


Our Valentine Parties were a success and such a treat for our students.


Academically, we are working very hard to close the learning gaps due to covid. As I'm sure many of you noticed on our report card, that our STAAR scores from last year were not as good as they were in 2019. Our teachers are working overtime with our students to support them with reviewing and reteaching concepts from previous years, all the while working on the current year's TEKS. We know that our students were struggling on a social/emotional level due to Covid. Brain research shows us that when we are stressed or worried, our brain reverts to a "fight or flight" mode. Concentration and focus are impacted greatly and we are seeing it in our students academically.


In the past, we have worked super hard to limit homework for our students because we know how hard they work during the day. However, we are finding that our students are needing more practice with basic concepts and they are needing more review.


Based on our observations and data, you may see your child coming home with a bit of homework to work on skills they are showing as weaknesses - especially in the area of math. PLEASE help us by making sure your child completes the homework. Research shows that students who do their homework can increase their learning and their scores/grades much faster than students who do not do homework. We are NOT talking hours of homework, but approximately 10 minutes per grade level, not including their 20 minutes of required reading every night. So, Kinder could have 10 minutes of work to do, while a 5th grader might have up to an hour. Thank you for your support!


Next week, I will start a 4 week segment on our RTI - Response to Intervention systems. I think you'll be amazed at the work we do to support ALL our students!

Last call for race t-shirts!

“Now is the time to go ahead and register your family for the Negley Races event on Saturday, March 5. There is a 5K, 3K, and 1K so there is something for all ages. We will also have some family entertainment so come on out! The deadline to make sure that you get your race shirt is this coming Monday, February 14 at midnight — after that the “sleepwalker” (shirt only) registration option will disappear. Give your Negley Valentine what they really want, make sure they get this year’s race shirt!

COUNSELOR'S CORNER

NATIONAL GUARD REQUEST:

A family who is affiliated with the National Guard has shared that they would LOVE to receive some letters from our students to help with morale. If you are interested in having your family participate, please have your kiddo write a letter or draw a picture! They can be dropped off in a box in Ms. Winn’s office. Some ideas for the letter… tell them what your life is like, what you like to do, favorite subjects in school and friendships. Let them know what you are excited about and what you want to be in the future. Tell some jokes or funny stories (kids have the best jokes). Please turn in all letters into the box in Ms. Winn’s office no later than March 1 so that we can send them! Thanks so much!


Spark Love 5K

Sign up for the first-ever Spark Love 5K and help fight food insecurity in the Hays CISD!

Ancora Ministries and HaysHope2Go support our students by sending food home every weekend with children who might not otherwise have enough to eat - including students from our school! Please consider signing up for the race and supporting this program!

Library

This week, we had an awesome makerspace week in the library! Students had an art challenge, a building challenge and a technology challenge to tackle for hands on learning fun. Students used Buddha Boards to create art using brushes and water to paint beautiful snowflake designs. They learned to code ozobot robots which are robots that are coded when you make marks with markers in a particular order to give it the code to do a certain action. Then, older students had the building challenge of building catapults out of straws and connectors. Younger students built snowflakes and winter scenes with Legos.


Birthday Book Club is back at Negley! We are excited to bring the Birthday Book Club back to Negley this spring semester. To donate a book in honor of your child's birthday, you will make a $15 donation through Revtrak here. You also need to print and fill in the following Birthday Club form here. Please have your student turn in this Book Club form to the library or their teacher who will get it to the library.


Your child will get to pick out a brand new book of their choice that has never been in our library before and a bookplate will be made with their name, showing that they donated the book in honor of their birthday. They will be the first student to get to check this book out before it enters our normal collection. When anyone checks it out after this, they will see that your child donated the book. Your child will also have their picture taken with the book (with your permission) and that will be on the wall in the library in a special place of honor.


If your child has a birthday between the months of August - January, they should have brought home a physical form this week. If your child has a birthday this Spring, they will receive a physical form as their birthday month nears. You can always use and print the online form and submit it to the library at any point.

News from Nurse JIll

Hello Navigator Parents and to all our new kiddos joining us this semester. Please read the information below for some important health related updates.


  • If your student needs to take prescription medication during the school day we must have a medication authorization from your child’s doctor. We will also need an emergency action plan for any student with severe allergic reactions, asthma, seizures or any other condition needing an emergency medication kept at school. These forms must be completed for each new school year.


  • If your student is staying home ill, you must call me so that we can have a conversation regarding your child’s health and clearance to return to campus.


  • If your student is sent home sick, they will need to follow the COVID protocol:

1. Option One: Your child may return to campus once all three of the following criteria are met:

· at least ten days have passed since symptoms first appeared OR at least 5 days have passed and the student will wear a well-fitting face mask for at least 5 days after they return, AND

· at least 24 hours has passed since resolution of fever (temperature less than 100.0 degrees F) for 24 hours WITHOUT medication containing Acetaminophen (Tylenol, MaPap) or Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), AND

· your child has significant improvement in symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath);


2. Option Two: Obtain a medical professional’s note clearing the you for return based on an alternative diagnosis.


3. Option Three: Obtain a molecular (PCR) test that comes back negative for COVID-19. Please note a rapid antigen test will not be accepted. This link can be used to look for options in your area that provide PCR tests (https://tdem.texas.gov/covid-19/ ).

Remember to bring your picture ID - always!

Please remember that ANYTIME you come to school to join your child (other than just dropping off your child at the beginning of the day) you MUST check in at the front office and get your Raptor sticker. To receive a sticker, you must present a photo ID regardless if this is your first time or thousandth time to check in to the school. This is for student safety and for us to know who is on our campus at all times. Thank you for being nice to the front office staff as they enforce this safety measure.

This does not apply to evening activities - just the school day.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Bell Schedule:

  • Doors open at 7:05.
  • Breakfast is free for all students and served until 7:25.
  • The Tardy Bell rings at 7:35 am. The car rider line doors will close at 7:35 and you will need to drop your child off at the front of the school.



Attendance:

  • If your student stays home due to illness, you MUST contact Nurse Jill before returning to school. 512-268-8501 or jill.wenzel@hayscisd.net
  • If your student is absent, please email our Attendance Clerk, Deborah Wilson, at nes.attendance@hayscisd.net to let us know
  • If your student needs to stay home for an extended period of time, please contact the teacher about Remote Conferencing options


Lunch:

  • Lunch is free for every student
  • Parents CAN bring lunch, from home or from a restaurant, to the front office for their student. Parents may NOT eat with them in the cafeteria


Dismissal:

· School gets out at 2:55 pm

  • Transportation Changes must be communicated to the teacher, and MUST be made through Kaci in the front office by 2:00 pm. 512-268-8501 or nes.attendance@hayscisd.net
  • The LATEST a student can be picked up early before dismissal is 2:15 pm
  • Our parent walker pickup line is finishing up by 3:10. Please be sure to be here on time to pick up your child.
  • The car rider line will close at 3:15. You will need to pick your child up at the front office, with your transportation tag OR photo id if you arrive after 3:15.
  • THE FRONT OFFICE CLOSES AT 3:30.


Birthdays:

  • Please contact your student’s teacher prior to bringing treats – they will give you classroom allergy info and class count
  • Birthday treats will only be handed out to students during the last 15 minutes of the day. Hays CISD recommends – and teachers definitely prefer - individually wrapped items (ex. Little Debbie treats). Homemade items will not be accepted. Please do not bring drinks! Balloons may NOT be taken into the school beyond the reception area.
