Keywords
- I can experiment with different keyword searches and compare their results.
- I can refine my searches by using multiple words, synonyms, and alternative words and phrases.
- I can draw inferences to explain my search results.
We came to the following conclusions:
- Keywords are the most important words related to a subject, those which you type into a search engine to find the information you want.
- When you use more words, you get fewer sites in your search results, but they are more likely to contain what you’re looking for. Although more words are usually better, it is important that the words you type be precise and relevant to the subject you are researching.
- Sometimes websites use different words or phrases to describe the information you are looking for. A synonym for a word may bring better results than the word itself.
Questioning
Students generated questions around the three research topics based on the books we are reading to prepare for the author visit. We discussed how researchers need a combination of thick and thin questions when conducting research.

Note Taking
I can take notes.
- I can cite title, author, and publication date of a print source when taking notes.
We discussed the importance of writing down the source of your information so that you avoid plagiarism - using someone else's work without giving credit.
We practiced Chris Lehman's Read, Cover, Jot, Reread Strategy for note taking:
Read a VERY short section of text
Cover or turn the page over so you cannot see it
Jot down any information you find important or noteworthy
- Reread the section to be sure you correctly recorded your information
This is an excellent note taking strategy because breaking reading into smaller chunks and turning over the book helps you to really comprehend what you are reading and then do the harder work of thinking of what was important and jotting that information down in your own words.
Students worked with partners to try this strategy after watching me model the strategy for them.
