The Roman Times
Chronicling the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire
The Beginnings of the Roman Empire
The empire began when Augustus Caesar became the 1st emperor in 31 b.c.e. and ended in the west when the last emperor, Romulus Augustulus, was deposed in 476 c.e. by a Germanic king.
The empire had grown so fast and so vast by 285 c.e. that it was divided between east and west to be ruled by two separate administrators. (It reached its height in 117 c.e.)
The eastern half of the Roman Empire continued as the Byzantine Empire until the fall of Constantinople and Constantine XI in 1453 c.e.
The influence on and contributions of the Roman Empire on western civilization cannot be understated.
