Tonya Middling - Principal
Vanessa Batts-Assistant Principal
Dear Parents and Families,
We have had a great week with students return to school! Students are quickly adjusting to the new school routines and expectations which will be emphasized throughout the month of September. Please review our parent and student handbook with your child for specific information about schoolwide expectations. When parents and students understand the expectations, it helps reduce any corrections a student may receive from the adults helping enforce those expectations.
September is Attendance Awareness Month and we hope to start the school year off strong with high levels of student attendance. Good attendance matters for school success, starting as early as prekindergarten and throughout elementary school. Developing the habit of attendance prepares students for success. Once too many absences have occurred, they can affect learning, regardless of whether absences are excused or unexcused. We appreciate your help to avoid unnecessary absences as much as possible. We also understand that some absences are unavoidable and occasionally, children get sick and need to stay home. Please ensure to contact the main office at 253-298-3200 for any absences your child may have.
We hope you’ll join us for Attendance Awareness Month to reduce chronic absenteeism!

Reminders from the Office
Office 253-298-3200 | Attendance/Leave Early 253-298-3206
Please read these important reminders from the office!
- If you need to come into the building, please press the intercom button on your right as you look at the front door. This will enable the office to see and hear you and buzz you into the entry if needed. Please have ID ready to show every time.
- Please notify the office of any changes in the way your child will go home at the end of the day. We need this information before 3:00 so we have time to get a note to the teacher.
- Call the office if your child will be absent. If they have an appointment, please ask the doctor, dentist, counselor, etc. for a note for school. Offices that treat children are used to giving notes to students for excuses!
- If you need to take your child out of school early, please make sure to come to the office at least 45 minutes before dismissal time. You will want to make sure to come early enough so that we can locate your child and so you won't be trapped in the after-school pick-up line! You will need to sign your child out and wait for them to come from their classroom, so allow plenty of time. Thank you for your help!
- If your phone number, email address, or home address changes, please let us know so we have the most up-to-date contact information for you. If your child becomes ill, or otherwise needs your help, we need a way to contact you! Thank you!
PROTECTION PLAN FOR LAPTOPS
This year Franklin Pierce Schools IT department will be offering optional, but highly recommended, protection plans for student laptops. This plan is $25 per student and can be paid via cash, check, or money order. Please watch for more details about when we will be collecting these funds.

BUS PROCEDURES
Please be patient, the first couple days of school the busses might be running late. We have a very helpful transportation department; if you have any questions, issues about something that happened on the bus or at the bus stop, or concerns about a late bus, please call the transportation office directly at 253-298-3865. To cut down on the number of calls received in the office daily we ask that if you wish for your child to ride a bus other than the one they normally ride, or get off at a bus stop other than their normal stop, you must send a note. The same holds true if you want your child to walk rather than ride their normal bus. Without a note, we will not allow students to walk or change their regular bus, bus stop, or end of the day routine.
Please be aware that any bus-riding kindergarten student that is not met at the bus stop after school will be returned to Central Avenue for parent pick-up. It is very important to meet your students at the bus stop on time!

Immunization Requirements
Per WA Department of Health, the immunization requirements in RCW 28A.210 regarding schools, the Department of Health has updated the Immunization Manual for Schools, Preschools, and Child Care Facilities (PDF). This means that all students enrolled at a public school must follow the immunization rules. Students will need a completed Certificate of Immunization Status (CIS) and/or Certificate of Exemption (COE) on file at the school or district program in order to attend school.
