Message from the Principal, Dr. Maguire
As quarter 2/Semester 1 comes to a close, I would like to share with you a pilot we are starting to run for Semester 2. The SHS Engineering program is excited to pilot mixed-honors engineering courses this spring. Students in any of our offerings (Engineering-1, Engineering-2, Robotics-1, and Engineering Capstone) can choose to take the course for honors credit. Students electing honors credit will complete more challenging tasks that involve the same engineering principals as those electing CP credit in the same course.
We think this is an excellent opportunity for students, particularly those who are interested in studying or working in any STEM field after their time at SHS. There is Please reach out to Patrick Newton (pnewton@scit.org) or Ralph Perrotto (rperrotto@scit.org) for more information. There is currently space in each Semester 2 course for anyone wishing to enroll now for the remainder of the year.
This week, we are bringing a committee together to discuss individual athletic accomplishments and how to best represent these achievements. Coaches, administrators, student athletes, and parents are serving on this committee to determine how to best showcase the individual and collective team efforts of our student athletes.

Dr. Maguire, SHS Principal

Thriving Amidst Racism
Jamari Wilkerson, who is a senior in Ms. Hall's Literature of the Self/memoir writing class, was recently featured on the Instagram account of the Boston Globe's "A Beautiful Resistance" series (abeautifulresistance on Instagram). He is quite proud of the message he submitted with the post and so are we!
Lessons on Trying New Things
Sarah Villa, Ira Zhusti, and Gretchen Voelger-Swain were recognized by their peers for producing the best videos during Ms. Hall's Class recent Personal Credo Video contest.
These students captured the spirit and substance of a junior project that promotes trying something new and exploring the tenets of Transcendentalism.

Multigenerational Collaboration.
Seniors in Mr. Scopelleti's Short Stories course were able to collaborate with some writers from the Scituate Council on Aging, who joined us for a virtual writers' workshop. We started with an icebreaker: what are three words you'd use to describe your senior year in high school, and why? Students then got into breakout rooms in which they shared the first or last pages of their original short stories. Students and our guests said it was great to hear how thoughtful everyone was and how good all of the stories are. This collaboration with the Council on Aging has been in place for three years now, and we're looking forward to many more years of sharing this intergenerational passion for writing. Thanks to our volunteers for being so generous with their time!

Every bone tells a story. Students in Ms. Hartweg's Honors Anatomy & Physiology Class learn that bones have features and tell stories. Markings show where ligaments and tendons are and can hint at what kind of environment a personis in (ie. lots of wear and tear- they're a worker, smooth markings- not very active/easier life). You can also tell about diet and oftentimes race by studying bones.

PEAR Tip of the Week
This week we're focusing on Active Engagement:
The past week has likely been stressful. The uncertainty of waiting for election results on top of the ongoing pandemic and challenges of remote/hybrid learning may have led to heightened worry or anxiety. Any time you’re anxious it can be useful to ground in your physical self and the world around you. Try going on a walk and paying attention to things you notice with each of your senses. (Notice Halloween decorations you see up, the smell of fallen leaves, the sounds of traffic, the feeling of your muscles moving etc.)
