Stop Motion Movies at Hallet Academy
DPS Library Services had the opportunity to visit Hallett Academy and spend time with the talented fourth-graders while they published stop-motion projects with Robbi Makely and Sarah Myers as part of their folklore unit. After learning about folklore components, students wrote scripts and edited and revised them with guidance from their teacher. Then came the challenging-and-fun part. Students used pictures of their school as backdrops for their handmade characters for their stories and, using the free IPad app called Stop Motion Studio, each small group took the many pictures as needed to create their characters’ movement on the screens. Members of the ETLS team came in to assist and were duly impressed as students recorded their video, added their script, and set the pacing for their stories.
The ETLS team was honored to attend the viewing party with Hallet’s animators, directors, and photographers, their parents and other district dignitaries (Instructional Superintendents and school admin) as we watched their masterpieces on the screen. Awards were handed out for achievements from “Funniest Voice Actor” to “Best Problem Solver.” Scripts were on display in the hall including the QR code to access the video folder. The students created and published outstanding movies, and this lesson plan, including the detailed “Student guide to Stop Motion Studio” and “Folklore and Stop Motion Final Project Rubric,” will be posted to the DLE website.
Hamilton Middle Super Bowl Reading Challenge!
Hamilton Middle School challenged West Rowan Middle School, in Salisbury, North Carolina, just outside of Charlotte, to a “read-off” in the spirit of friendly competition. Hamilton Middle School students defeated Carolina students by reading more pages than their competition between Wednesday, Feb. 3 and Friday, Feb. 5. The read-off agreement was reached between Hamilton Middle School Principal Dr. Christian Sawyer and West Rowen Middle School Principal Derek McCoy. Paralibrarian Carolyn Leahy shared the excitement and articles from both Channel 9 and Channel 7. Way to go Huskies!
