Substitute Forecast
There is an unusually high number of substitutes being requested over the next two weeks. Between October 29 and November 9, there are unfilled jobs on every day except one. Currently, there are 45 people slatted to be out on November 1st. Those out for Assessment/Report Card Days are the first to be called back by the District Office, followed by District Business and School Business. Let's keep our fingers crossed and our families healthy.
Fire Drill Report
Thanks again for helping the fire drill go so well on Thursday. Per the SCCFD, please keep your doors closed during a fire drill, but allow for access by leaving it unlocked or with the magnet in place.
Students in Classrooms @ Recess and Lunch
Please remember that students cannot be left unsupervised in classrooms during recess and lunch. To prevent students from entering an unattended classroom, it is important that doors remain locked during these times.
Halloween Seating Map
Susan created an updated seating chart for Wednesday's Halloween parade. A copy will be placed in your box, but if you just can't wait, click here.
Lunch Club Reminder
Don't forget that Mary Fran is attending a STEAM symposium, so lunch clubs are cancelled on Monday.
REPORT CARD HINTS & HELPS
OVERVIEW
☐Identify which standards your grade level will be reporting on during this first reporting period and which standards will receive NA (this should be consistent across the grade level) If you are in the middle of an Eureka module you may want to put NA and wait until the following reporting period.
☐Figure out how you will give scores for specific math standards
☐No Percentage scoring - please use the rubric that Eureka provides and/or no fractions should be placed on the top of a mid-module or end of module as a score.
☐Print out sample student math answers to show parents especially an example of what a ‘4’ looks like https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZW3RQoCcAR_22UBcGvNZkGifR5N5LqEe9IfbubuLxs4/edit
☐Science scoring - discuss and decide how you are going to give scores for NGSS standards
REPORT CARD/CONFERENCE TALKING POINTS
Blanket statement to begin a conference:
Know that the scores your child receives in each standard on the report card reflect their
current skills as compared to where we would hope they would be at the end of the year.
For example: Our goal is that a child would meet expectations (a score of 3) in narrative
writing in June. If your child is scoring a 2 right now, your child is approaching grade level
standards, and should continue to grow toward a score of 3 by the end of the year.
Using a standards based report card and 1-4 scores lends gently with explaining to parents the emphasis for learning and love of school. Our students are very young and saying “emerging” and “approaching” is developmentally appropriate.
If a student is not able to complete a Eureka math assessment (or it takes multiple days to complete) this is an indicator that the student is not at a 3 yet.
4s show that a student is producing work in multiple ways and is going deeper with understanding a concept.
Use descriptors to help explain how students are progressing towards standard mastery.
Use the comments box on the report cards to give specifics about academic levels and behavior/focus in the classroom and on the playground.
