F.L.A.M.E. Across the Grades K-5
Our first nine weeks are in full swing with each of our grade levels and all of our students working on their FLAME goals in our novel study activites, through all our stations and in their research work. We are excited to share some of the things we have done so far and look forward to a year filled with progress and fun!
First Grade F.L.A.M.E.
Our first grade students come to us this year on a new day, our Terrific Tuesday group. We have been traveling west with Pa, Ma, Laura, Mary and baby Carrie. They are working on creating their own covered wagons and then filling them with all the supplies they will need. All the students are busy visiting their favorite stations each week and focusing on those which best meet their goals. They have been working on Math through Prodigy and Hands on Equations. At our writing station they have been creating adventure stories. Our puzzle masters have been completing Cryptograms, Cipers, Sudoku, Jumbles and Coding. Our builders have been completing various Lincoln Log challenges and our artists have been drawing scenes from the prairie.
Second Grade F.L.A.M.E.
Second grade FLAME starts the week off with us every Marvelous Monday. They have begun their journey through "The Lands Beyond" with Milo and Tock. They escaped the Doldrums by thinking and ventured on to Dictionopolis where letters are grown on trees and sold at the Marketplace. They have even made their own brightly colored letters. Each student has also been working to become a First Class Book Detective by finding their evidence and properly citing it to support all their work! Stations are up and running smoothing which include K'Nex Engineering challeenges, Puzzles, Coding, Writing, Art, Prodigy, Hands on Equations, Foreign Language, Writing and much more. They have also just begun researching an animal of choice for their larger presentation project.
Third Grade F.L.A.M.E.
Third grade arrives in the middle of our week every Wonderl Wednesday. They are the first group to begin reading our new novel study book, "The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basel E. Frankweiler". They have run to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New Your City with Claudia and Jamie. They have found a statue of an Angel that may have been sculpted by Michelangelo and are determined to prove that it is authentic. With our novel set in an art museum, our students are working in pairs to research their chosen Tableaux Vivant artwork and artist for their mid-year presentation. They have also been working on mini research projects every other week that relate to our novel study for class presentations along with their comprehension work with textual evidence to support. The students spend the second part of their day working in both FLAME classrooms on stations that align with their goals. Art, Foreign Language, Nine Weeks Critical and Creative Team Challenge, Research and Writing are available in Mrs. Sullivan's class. Coding, Engineering, Hands on Equations, Prodigy and Puzzles are in Mr. Allard's classroom. We encourage all students to choose stations that help them progress in their specific goals, but also want them to explore new areas of interest too.
Fourth Grade F.L.A.M.E.
Fourth Grade is thriving on Thursday and heading around the world with Philleas Fogg. Mr. Fogg has taken the wager with members of the Reform Club and has set out to prove he can venture around the world in exactly 80 days. All the students have begun the process of mini research projects that they work on completing within a two week span and presenting to their peers on the third week of the novel study. The fourth week is followed by a comprehensive review of the novel chapters they have read. Students have also begun their first half of the year research on their country of choose. The rubric and timeline are available in their Google Classroom and they may work on their research portion of the project at home if they wish. As always, they are also spending time each weeks visiting stations in Mrs. Sullivan's and Mr. Allard's classrooms.
