Professional Book of the Month

Mindsets in the Classroom: Building a Culture of Success and Student Achievement in Schools. When students believe that dedication and hard work can change their performance in school, they grow to become resilient, successful students. Inspired by the popular mindset idea that hard work and effort can lead to success, Mindsets in the Classroom provides educators with ideas for ways to build a growth mindset school culture, wherein students are challenged to change their thinking about their abilities and potential. The book includes a planning template, step-by-step description of a growth mindset culture, and "look-fors" for adopting a differentiated, responsive instruction model teachers can use immediately in their classrooms

App of the Month: ChatterPix

ChatterPix can make anything talk. ChatterPix is a simple and useful app. It allows students to take a picture or use an image saved to the camera. With a swipe of their finger, students can draw a mouth on any image. There is one button to press to record, and the mouth then animates with the recording. Use ChatterPix to define vocabulary, summarize books/text, provide information about a historical figure, or quickly explain a process. The possibilities are endless.

Take a look at the very brief Chatterpix samples below that were created by SOMS students. These samples were created for your benefit so they are very short. Im sure if you use this in the classroom you would go a little more in depth :)

Web Resources You May Want to Checkout

Want to get Microsoft Office for Free?!?!?!

All you have to do is direct your faculty/staff and students to the following website - http://office.com/GetOffice365. At this site, select Student or Teachers, select Find out if you’re eligible, enter your email address, and then follow the instructions that will be sent back to you via email. At this point you will be able to install Office via the internet. What’s nice here is that Office will automatically be updated for your Windows and MAC users. Each user would need to have a valid email address provided by your district. We are in the midst of a series of webcasts regarding Office 365 including one on downloading Office Pro Plus. You can find the recordings and schedule at www.tinyurl.com/O365KYTN.
