High School Highlights
Weekly Updates from Big Walnut High School
April 26, 2019
It was a big week at BWHS! We had the end of state testing, our prom promise assembly, a senior class meeting regarding graduation and our second annual military and academic signing day. It's hard to believe May will be here next week! We will continue our Tuesday Eagle Time schedule on both April 30 and May 7 to allow students to get additional help and support in their academic classes as the year winds down. Please encourage your student(s) to take advantage of this time to finish the year EAGLE STRONG!
Our 2019 Junior/Senior Prom is tomorrow night from 6-11pm at Villa Milano on Schrock Road in Westerville. The theme is "Enchanted Forrest" and we're sure it will be a night to remember!
As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teachers, school counselor or the administration if you have any questions or concerns. Feel free to contact the main office at 740-965-3766 between the hours of 7:00 and 3:15.
Apology for BWHS Yearbook

Groundbreaking Ceremony for Our New Buildings!
We are excited to announce our Groundbreaking Ceremony on April 30. Due to the limited parking and condition of the construction site, the attendees will be minimal and by invitation only. However, we hope you will join us on Facebook Live to view the ceremony at 7:00 p.m. We will be hosting a viewing celebration at the high school in the auditorium.
Rain date will be determined if necessary.

BWHS Seat Belt Survey Results
Recently the SAFE Delaware County Coalition did a random survey of our seat belt usage as cars were leaving our parking lot. Here are the results:
- 285 vehicles driven by teen drivers were surveyed
- 90% of drivers were buckled which is excellent!
- 63 front passengers were observed and of those, 85% were buckled up!
Great job Eagles!

Programming and Robotics Students Participate in the National Robotics Challenge
Two teams--one of Ryan Erickson & Gary Davis and the other of Austin Stewart, Mason Holycross, and Carson Erick--competed in the Rescue Robot challenge and had to design, build and operate a robot to navigate different terrain and retrieve objects. This was the first year that Big Walnut competed in this event. Both teams did exceptionally well during the preliminary rounds of competition, winning several rounds of competition against other high school students and advanced into the final rounds which were held on Saturday, April 13. Ryan Erickson and Gary Davis placed 5th and Carson Erick, Mason Holycross, and Austin Stewart placed 8th overall. Several of the students have plans to compete again next year.
One student, Andrew Humphreys, participated in the Interactivity Challenge and was given the task of building and coding arduino circuits using node.js that included at least two digital sensors and two analog sensors. Andrew rose to the challenge and his inclusion of virtual reality elements in his design earned him an award as a Honda Innovation Award nominee. The Honda Innovative Design nomination was given to only 11 out of 422 competitors and teams. He also earned a Gold Award for his project--this is the highest honor given in this competition.
Congrats to all these students!
Final Corey Lehman Memorial Volleyball Tournament
The 20th annual Corey Lehman Memorial Volleyball Tournament will be on Saturday, July 6, 2019. This will be the final year for the tournament. This non-profit tournament raises funds to give out scholarships to Big Walnut student athletes. Since 2000, over $53,000 has been given to these students.
