Student Voice at MRHS: Shark Bites!
Students can stop in at anytime during Jawsome. There will be a series of questions posted around the room and students are able to drop by and respond. Students will also have access to principal Burkhead during that time to talk about things that are important to them. The goal is to allow students to share their feelings about our school, to share their possible solutions and for us to take action. Ultimately, we want to move our school from Good to GREAT!
Free & Reduced Lunch- Important Announcement:
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Please remember that those students who qualify for free or reduced lunch also qualify for free or reduced breakfast.
STUDENTS OF WEB DESIGN DISPLAY THEIR WORK ON-LINE
Students of Web Design now have a home for showing off their work. www.mrhsweb.org is a site dedicated to providing a platform for students to show off their creative coding skills. During the first semester, students of Web Design learned how to code using the language of the web: HTML and CSS. Their work culminated in developing their own multi-page websites that are proudly on display on the class website: www.mrhsweb.org
MRHS and JFK: Artistically Honoring Our Past:
On Thursday January 25 from 1-2pm on "main street" of Monomoy Regional High School Ms. Donovan's Portfolio I students and Mr. Alexander's Kennedy Years class will host an art reception displaying artwork inspired by a recent visit to the JFK Museum on Main Street in Hyannis. Museum Education Director Jennifer Pappalardo, Executive Director John Allen, and educational board member Carl Lopes took the class on a behind the scenes tour of the museum where students not only learned about the life and times of the Kennedy family but also saw firsthand what it took to curate and exhibit a successful and cohesive show. Students then took what they gleaned from that day to create an original artwork based on any aspect of the personal and political life of JFK or his family members that the students personally connected to. This exhibit is completely curated by the students; They made choices about the artwork, text, artifacts, and photographs from the JFK museum displayed in the show.

Students in Alternative Education Program Thriving!
Their work will be on display in the Vault Gallery at the Center starting this evening through early February. A sample of their work is below. They were incorporating concepts such as color/contrast, form, flow, shadowing, etc. If you are in Yarmouth stop in and say who you are and take a peek at their photos.
The Cultural Center provides workshops for our students through their Rise and Shine Program with local artists, writers, playwrights, and chefs and other groups. This helps connect the state standards to the real world and supports our students with many of the skills they will need after high school such as communication, collaboration, creativity, planning ahead etc. Grants from the Cultural Councils of Harwich and Chatham for transportation help make this possible.
The opening reception for their project (and other artists) is tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Mr. Sowpel will be present.
The Cultural Center is located on Old Main Street which is at the end of Station Avenue - exit 8 (across Rt. 28) in Yarmouth. http://www.cultural-center.org/

This link offers information on teen dating violence.
Dating Violence Prevention | Youth.gov
Healthy relationships consist of trust, honesty, respect, equality, and compromise. Unfortunately, teen dating violence—the type of intimate partner violence that occurs between two young people who are, or who were once in, an intimate relationship—is a serious problem in the United States. A national survey found that ten percent of teens, female and male, had been the victims of physical dating violence within the past year and approximately 29 percent of adolescents reported being verbally or psychologically abused within the previous year. Teen dating violence can be any one, or a combination, of the following:
- Physical. This includes pinching, hitting, shoving, or kicking.
- Emotional. This involves threatening a partner or harming his or her sense of self-worth. Examples include name calling, controlling/jealous behaviors, consistent monitoring, shaming, bullying (online, texting, and in person), intentionally embarrassing him/her, keeping him/her away from friends and family.
- Sexual. This is defined as forcing a partner to engage in a sex act when he or she does not or cannot consent.
It can negatively influence the development of healthy sexuality, intimacy, and identity as youth grow into adulthood4 and can increase the risk of physical injury, poor academic performance, binge drinking, suicide attempts, unhealthy sexual behaviors, substance abuse, negative body image and self-esteem, and violence in future relationships.5
Teen dating violence can be prevented, especially when there is a focus on reducing risk factors as well as fostering protective factors, and when teens are empowered through family, friends, and others (including role models such as teachers, coaches, mentors, and youth group leaders) to lead healthy lives and establish healthy relationships. It is important to create spaces, such as school communities, where the behavioral norms are not tolerant of abuse in dating relationships. The message must be clear that treating people in abusive ways will not be accepted, and policies must enforce this message to keep students safe.
