DR. SEUSS NIGHT TONIGHT
DR. SEUSS NIGHT MARCH 9th 5-7PM
Come dressed as your favorite Dr. Seuss Character, enjoy a free taco dinner, be creative and have some great family fun.
This week there’s a celebration for all to enjoy.
A celebration of someone who brought us much joy!
Dr. Seuss had a birthday and wants us to know.
That this Thursday night is when our school will show,
how we can have fun with his books, not one but them all.
There is fun for all ages, the big and the small.
You will eat lots and make things and move quite a bit.
Come from 5-7 pm and we will do way more than sit, sit, sit.
Enjoy some of the Dr. Seuss activities: make your own butter, take selfies, make Yertle the Turtle and a Wocket for your pocket, ring a gack, make and decorate a hat, plus 9 more. We hope to see you there.

SCHOOL HAPPENINGS
IDIT - A - READ
It's Idit-A-Read time!
Please start keeping track of the minutes you are reading and help us reach Nome in the Month of March. The Big Lake Elementary Idit-A-Read race has begun. Two calendars were sent home last week to help you keep track of the minutes you read at home for the month of March. One calendar is for the students to record their reading minutes and must be initialed by the parents and the second calendar is for the parents to record their reading minutes and please have your child initial that calendar to verify for the teacher. The Calendars will be turned in on Thursdays to the classroom teacher who will record the minutes for the Idit-A-Read team to mark the trail. Students and classrooms can earn prizes along the trail for all the hard work they put into reading. Follow the trail with the Dr. Seuss Characters in the hallways of our school to see how the students, parents and classrooms are doing and most of all just keep on reading!!!!
PEAKS TESTING
All 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will be taking the State of Alaska’s annual assessment. This year our test has been designed from a new company and is called the PEAKS Test. Testing will take place on April 4th and 5th. All students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will take a language arts and math assessment and the 4th graders will also take the Science test. This year the test will be a paper test instead of a computer based one. This should reduce the number of technical issues that greatly affected the testing last year. To help your child do his or her best on this test please encourage them and even though the sunshine is out more and more please make sure they are getting plenty of sleep and are ready to work hard. These tests can be a stressful time for your child so please continue to recognize the positives and encourage them along the way.
XC SKIING
A reminder of when your student will ski: Mondays is for 5th and kindergarten, Tuesdays is 1st and 3rd grades, Wednesday is 2nd and 4th grade, unless you made arrangements with the coaches to have your student ski on a different day.
If for some reason, you would like your student to ride the bus home instead of staying after school for skiing, please call the school office at 892.9700 to let us know.

LEGOS

MUSIC NOTES
Congrats to the band students for doing a fantastic job at the combined band concert this past week! It was so exciting to hear our band students so prepared and blend so well with the other bands.
Upcoming Keyboarding/Piano Club will be offered for the remainder of the year starting after Spring Break on Tuesdays beginning March 21st from 8:30am-9am for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. Completed permission with cash or check for $5 may be returned to the school office. Or pay online at schoolcashonline.com with a debit or credit card. Return completed permission slip to the school office.
Recorder Karate is coming to the 3rd graders after spring break. Parents should have seen a letter come home already explaining recorder sales and rentals. The best way to ensure success for our 3rd graders is to have a recorder at home for them to practice. Purchase a recorder with debit/credit card online at schoolcashonline.com, or with cash or check at the school office.
Feel free to call or email Mrs. Hardman with any questions.
LIBRARY PAGES
LOST BOOKS
With Spring Break next week please take some time to search if your child has any missing books! Any from other schools can be turned in here and I can get them to their home school. It’s never too late to turn in missing books! Lost books may be replaced with any book of equal value (preferably hardback) that kids will want to read. Annebelle’s Used Books is a great place to find replacements.
