Northwest High School Families,
I hope this message finds everyone enjoying this first weekend in June! We are looking forward to an exciting week ahead as we hold our 24th annual commencement ceremony at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in celebration of the class of 2023 promptly at 2:30 p.m. There will be no school for all other students on the day of the ceremony, Wednesday, June 7.
Seniors! Do not forget that your attendance at graduation rehearsal is required. You should arrive at 7:30 and report directly to the gym lobby entrance.
A reminder to all 11th grade students that you should NOT park in the senior parking lot tomorrow morning, Monday, June 5. Seniors will be here for graduation rehearsal.

In this week's newsletter, there are only a few new items including this week's College and Career Updates, information regarding five (5) things to know from MCPS from Thursday, June 1, and a complete list of the Senior Awards handed out at the ceremony on Thursday, May 25.
The rest of this week's newsletter contains reminders including information regarding our upcoming pride week activities this week, a chance for students to submit essays and art for a contest from the caucus of African American leaders, Northwest specific grading and reporting guidelines, all the after school tutoring opportunities for Northwest students, ways to join the PTSA and Booster Clubs, College T-Shirt Tuesdays, and a way to buy Class spirit gear!

Highlights include:
- NEW! A University of Maryland (UMD) College Park Event! Throughout CAC, attendees will have the opportunity to attend a variety of sessions designed to help first-generation and underrepresented 10th and 11th grade students and their families gain a better understanding of the college admission process. During the event UMD will provide information and resources to prepare students for applying to college. There will also be a chance to tour the University of Maryland's beautiful campus and meet representatives from academic programs and campus services. - NEW! CAREER & TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION Summer School Program 2023 @ Seneca Valley and Wheaton High Schools - offered both virtual and in-person formats: CTE summer school program (view program details). Visit the CTE Summer School web page for course details and registration. Our program will be hybrid. We are virtual on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and in-person on Wednesdays. Automotive Dealer Educator Institute (a great way to gain employment) & The Mentoring Path - The mentoring path is a one-week camp for young men ages 16 and older. After the camp session ends TMP offers continuing mentorship for a minimum of six months. Our experienced staff is committed to filling a vital role for young men who have a strong need to be seen and respected by adults, and to receive guidance as teenagers.

- REMINDER! CHECKMATE YOUR COLLEGE APPLICATION with the Admissions Gambit Scholars Program. Admissions Gambit is proud to provide FREE expert college admissions and essay development services to rising seniors who will be the first in their family to attend college and have a family income below $75,000. Scholars will participate in virtual sessions led by a former executive director of admissions and various guest speakers. Parents will also receive information about financial aid and scholarships. The program will run from July through December of this year. Apply HERE by June 15. - SCHOLARSHIP: Abbott and Fenner Scholarship Program. High school JUNIORS and SENIORS. $1,000. To apply for this scholarship, you will need to write an essay on the topic below. The essay should be between 500 and 1000 words. Submissions should be sent by email to: scholarships@abbottandfenner.com. Topic: Describe your educational career and life goals. Explain your plan for achieving these goals. Include your degree/major, why you selected it, and how this degree/major will help you achieve your goals. - SCHOLARSHIP: The ARMY RESERVE Minuteman Scholarship. Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty (GRFD) Scholarship awarded by United States Army Cadet Command for the Army Reserve. Applicants must have a minimum high school GPA of 2.5. Minimum college test scores include SAT of 850 or ACT of 19. College Test Prep:
- ACT/SAT Prep Summer Classes! Classes offered both in-person and online (via Zoom) with options during June, July, and August.
- The Princeton Review is offering a free SAT® Practice Test for students who wish to get in some prep before their next official College Board Exam. Students can take this test anytime over the summer; registration can be found here. Directions for completing the exam will be emailed, and students will receive a full-length score report upon completion of the exam. Offer dated: 4 May 2023. 1. Celebrating the Class of 2023
Ceremonies began this week for the nearly 12,000 MCPS graduating seniors. Graduation ceremonies will take place until June 15. Check out the MCPS homepage for photos, senior reflections and more as we celebrate the Class of 2023!

2. Free Online Resources for Practice, Prep and Review Available this Summer
Free online resources are now available to support students who are not participating in summer tutoring or summer school. The document includes free academic resources and activities for elementary, middle and high school students to review content, practice skills and prepare for the upcoming school year.
3. Donate Today to the GIVE BACKPacks Campaign
For just $20, you can provide a student in need with a backpack filled with school supplies, including pencils/pens, crayons/colored pencils, a glue stick, folders, binders and more.
Help spread the word about this campaign by sharing the campaign flyer with colleagues, family, friends, your company and community members. Every donation helps a student in need.

4. Give Your Feedback on the Antiracist System Action Plan
MCPS will continue to make updates to the Antiracist System Action Plan presented to the Board of Education last month. We invite students, staff and families to review the plan and give us your suggestions by Friday, June 16.
5. Bright Spots This Week
Candlewood Principal Wins Mark Mann Award
Candlewood Elementary School principal Carolynn Walsleben is this year’s Mark Mann Excellence and Harmony Award winner. The Mark Mann award is presented annually to an MCPS administrator who has shown exceptional performance in promoting academic excellence, positive human relations and community outreach. Read more.
Celebrating Excellence in Autism Services
MCPS celebrated excellence in autism services during the second annual Autism Unit Awards on May 24. Teachers, paraeducators, administrators, service providers, volunteers and substitutes were recognized. Read more.

Northwest Class Spirit!
It's a long-standing tradition at Northwest for each grade to wear their assigned CLASS COLOR on Pep Rally days! Each class sits in a designated section at the rallies so make an impact for YOUR CLASS by wearing your grade level color and make your presence known! Although participation with wearing class colors is optional, we hope you will join in the FUN!
The grade level colors are as follows:
Freshmen (Grade 9): YELLOW
Sophomores (Grade 10): GREEN
Juniors (Grade 11): RED
Seniors (Grade 12): BLUE
You can wear any clothing and/or accessories in your assigned color as long as you adhere to the school dress code. You can opt to wear clothing that you already own in your grade level color, you can purchase a shirt from the PTSA/Booster Club website for $8: http://www.nwhsptsa.org/shop (available sizes and quantities are limited), or you can purchase a T-shirt in your color at Michael's or Joanne's (the cost is usually around $5) and personalize with fabric markers or paint pens! The possibilities are endless to show your #JagPride!
