Sandia Vista Elementary
September Newsletter
Dear Boomer Families:
We've just about made it through our first month of school. While we were hopeful for a more normal year, it seems we haven't gotten there just yet. We are confident that despite the continuous challenges this will be a productive year for our students. As always, our goal is to always ensure that all students at Sandia Vista are healthy, happy, and safe while
they are learning. We have continued to see our pick-up and drop-off time decrease significantly. One easy way to help at pick up is to make sure your child's names are displayed in the window so that we can quickly call for them. We have colored sheets of paper to display in your windows. If you need one, we will have them in the pick-up lane each afternoon.
Thank you for all the support you have given to our teachers and staff so far! They have worked extremely hard to ensure that students are learning at home if they need to be quarantined. Please remember that our guidelines are requirements from the state of New Mexico and we do not have any control over the requirements set forth in the COVID19 Response Toolkit. Please take some time to read through the toolkit and familiarize yourself with the updated information.
Please also remember that being quarantined and being out for travel are very different. If you elect to have your child out for travel the absence will be unexcused. Truancy letters will be sent out when students reach 3, 5, 7 & 10 days of unexcused absences. Letters will begin going out to families next week. Students will have an opportunity to make up any work they missed when they return. Teachers will not be assigning students' work to students ahead of time unless they are quarantined.
Go, Boomers!

Masks & Water Bottles
Also please be sure to send a water bottle with your child daily. We want to make sure your students are staying hydrated. We do not have water bottles to supply to children if they forget to bring one from home. Thanks for your help!
Flip Flops
Please make sure your students are not wearing flip-flops to school. Footwear that is safe and appropriate for the weather and other conditions must be worn at all times on campus and in buildings.

EMPATHY
This month we are talking about the social-emotional skill of Empathy. We are using this definition at school:
Empathy: the ability to understand and connect to the feelings of another.
Empathy is a crucial skill for being in a community with others and a powerful skill to develop in personal and professional relationships. We are focusing on a few key pieces of Empathy: knowing how we feel (and having language to describe those feelings!), understanding what others are feeling, and listening to others well so that we can connect in more meaningful ways!
