Parent Teacher Conferences are coming October 19
This fall, parent teacher conferences will be held virtually on Tuesday, October 19, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. On Wednesday, October 13, the online PTC scheduler will open for families to select their preferred time slots. Appointments are required and will be offered in 10-minute time slots. Families will receive a direct email in the coming weeks, including additional information and the sign up link.
PCR COVID test offered for symptomatic students and staff
As a way to expedite the testing process for students and staff who are experiencing symptoms of COVID or were close contacts of a confirmed case, Leyden has started utilizing onsite molecular PCR tests. This is in addition to the BinaxNow Antigen tests currently being used as well. Both tests require consent, either from the parent/guardian of the student or the staff member, respectively. In the event that a student is experiencing symptoms during the school day, parents/guardians can expect to be contacted directly and asked to provide consent either through an online or paper form.
“We are hopeful this will expedite the testing process, which will allow students and staff to return back to Leyden sooner,” said Assistant Superintendent Dr. Brian Mahoney. “It will also allow contact tracing to become more efficient, further improving safety and mitigation measures.”
Free virtual tutoring is available for students
Leyden will offer free virtual tutoring for students who need additional academic support beyond the hours of the school day (7:35 a.m. - 2:40 p.m.). Tutoring will be available for classes that are graduation requirements and provided by Leyden teachers.
Students may request an appointment for virtual tutoring provided by Leyden teachers on a date and time that is convenient, including evenings and weekends. Tutoring will be available for the subjects of English, Health, Math, Science, and Social Science.
Students should request appointments using the online form. This form initiates communication and ensures a streamlined process. The tutoring program coordinator will schedule tutoring sessions within 48 hours of the request.
Feature Story: Leyden hosts trade fair
Leyden students attended a Trades Fair this past week where they interacted with professionals from many career fields including, fire science, criminal justice, automotive programs, welding, cosmetology and carpentry. Each job representative offered pamphlets and conversation about what a career in a trade could mean and what it would take to succeed.
“I think a lot of our students are unaware of how many different options they have after they graduate from high school. One of the biggest benefits of having this Trades Fair is that our students are going to be able to see different jobs in the community that they live in and start looking at what classes they might want to be taking to prepare themselves for that," said Leyden Director of Careers and Community Outreach, Frank Holthouse.
Chicago Pipefitters 597 Admissions Director, Adam Sutter says he has been attending Leyden High School's Trades Fair for many years. "597 receives a lot of Leyden graduates," he said. "Leyden is unlike any other school and unique in the fact they offer a lot of courses to prepare their students for the next level."
Leyden continues to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month
On Tuesday, October 5, author Fred Aceves will present a virtual session with students and participants via livestream on the district’s YouTube channel from 8:25 a.m. to 9:10 a.m. Aceves wrote “The New David Espinoza” and “The Closest I’ve Come,” which he will discuss and answer questions on during his author talk with Leyden.Senior photo appointments available
