A Message from Mrs. Vena
Dear Glen Grove Families,
The very unique 2020-21 school year is finally coming to an end and with it so does my role as the principal of Glen Grove School. I never could have imagined that I would be heading into retirement during a global pandemic, but as I reflect on my career and on the challenges of this past year and a half, I am actually filled with gratitude.
Thank you, families, for your unwavering support. The level to which you have needed to become our academic and social-emotional teaching partners this year has brought new meaning to being part of your child’s educational experience. Thank you for adapting to constantly changing schedules and routines and for your grace as we adjusted to those same changes. Thank you for boosting our teachers’ spirits with your warm smiles at pick-up and drop-off and for the kind words that came our way in numerous notes and cards throughout the year. We have missed having you in our schools, so these interactions took on added intensity and meaning and are appreciated more than you know.
Most of all, thank you, families, for raising such amazing children. As we have navigated five different versions of school this year, our students have remained positive and responsive. They may only be 8, 9 and 10 year-olds, but they have shown maturity beyond their years in their commitment to the safety of everyone by wearing masks all day and staying distanced from their friends, teachers and classmates. I am so very proud of the children who came through our doors every day with smiling faces that masks couldn’t hide and gave the challenges of learning during COVID their best effort. I am equally proud of our courageous GOAL students who have sacrificed social interactions with their friends and face time with their teachers for the sake of safety and the benefit of their families. Your children are my inspiration! What fun it has been getting to know them, and what an honor it has been to be their principal.
My twelve years at Glen Grove have been filled with so much joy and so many blessings. I will miss the little and the big people that make up this excellent school community, and I leave feeling honored and privileged to have served the teachers, support staff, families and students of Glen Grove School.
With much appreciation,
Helena Vena
A note from Mrs. Shefler
Dear Gator Families,
It has been my pleasure and privilege to serve the Glen Grove community as Assistant Principal for the past two school years. Working to support your students, and partnering with your families in my time at Glen Grove has been an incredible experience, for which I will always be grateful. As I move on to my new role at Lyon school, I will fondly remember my time as a Gator. Have a wonderful summer!
Stefanie Shefler

Fall Band and Orchestra Information
Dear 3rd & 4th Grade Students & Parents,
Students in District 34 can choose to study a band or orchestra instrument beginning in 4th grade. Students who don’t participate in 4th grade can still join in grades 5-8.
Instruction is offered for the following instruments:
Band
Flute, Trumpet, Percussion, Oboe, Horn, Clarinet, Trombone, Saxophone and Baritone
Orchestra
Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass
During the first weeks of school next fall, the instrumental music teachers will meet with 4th & 5th grade students to introduce them to band and orchestra and help them choose an instrument to study. Following this presentation, parents will receive information on how to enroll their child in the program and rent an instrument.
We strongly recommend renting an instrument from our preferred vendors (PM Music for Band & Hoffman Strings for Orchestra) to have a high-quality beginner instrument delivered to school. Purchasing an instrument online or from a discount store is discouraged, as they are often very low quality. If your family already owns an instrument you’d like to use, please bring it to a music store over the summer to have it examined and repaired if necessary.
Lessons for beginning students will start the week of September 13th.
Playing an instrument can be a big commitment but is also very rewarding. Ensemble playing teaches teamwork, cooperation, and responsibility as well as providing an outlet for students’ creativity. Instrumental music has also been shown to benefit students’ brain development in numerous ways.
Please contact the band or orchestra teacher from your school with any additional questions. We look forward to making music together in the fall!
Please contact Cindy Warren at cwarren@glenview34.org with questions.
