CROC TALK BRIEF
Nancy Ryles Elementary Newsletter ~ April 6, 2018
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE by Kayla Bell
Dear Families -
I wanted to share with you a little about our IlluminatED day on Wednesday. The goal of the day was to IGNITE, INNOVATE and have an IMPACT on student engagement and learning. I hope your child came home and shared with you what they did in the classroom.
This day was a partnership with students and staff at Nancy Ryles along with our Beaverton Innovation Strategist team. Our Innovation Strategists provided students with some incredible hands on learning experiences and introduced them to new materials and technology applications. These hands on activities promoted collaboration, innovation and higher level thinking skills. While our Innovation Strategists were teaching students in the classroom, classroom teachers were touring other classrooms and learning alongside students.
Our day began with a cohort of fourth and fifth grade students learning videography skills. This team of students was deployed to gather images throughout the day that represented student engagement and learning. At the end of our day, we had a video to represent IlluminatED.
What did our students experience Wednesday? The list is long……
Engineering and Design * Coding * Seesaw * PicCollage * Ozobots * Sphero Shapes * Lego WeDo * Breakout EDU * Dot and Dash * Greenscreen * Book Creator * Circuitry * Cubelets * Makey Makey * Bloxels * Filmmaking * And the FUTURE BUS!!!!
Our goal at Nancy Ryles is to keep learning new things and to continue to innovate. We are currently preparing our Innovation and Design Lab and within this space we are creating a Makerspace. What is Makerspace? A Makerspace is an area that encourages students to design, experiment and invent while engaging in science, engineering, innovation and design. Interested in learning more? Check out this article. You can help us make this space a reality by contributing items on this list. Makerspace Wish List
You can also help us by contributing to our BEF grant. Money contributed will be used to purchase additional iPads for our fourth and fifth grade teams. Any additional money collected will be to purchase additional iPads to support other grade levels. BEF Grant Ultimately, we would love to have an 90 additional iPads to support innovation in grades 3,4,5. Our goal is large, but we are inspired to work towards making it a reality.
I am so excited with the direction we are moving. Thank you for supporting the work we do. I also want to remind you to come to our NRCO STEM Night on May 10. We hope to ‘open’ our Innovation and Design Lab that night and showcase some of the opportunities available to students.
If you follow us on Twitter, you already saw these images. If not, check them out at https://twitter.com/NancyRylesElem. Earlier I mentioned that our videography team collected images. You can see a video of our IlluminatED day HERE!!! A big thank you to our Innovation Strategist team for editing and producing this video for us.
Enjoy your weekend!

NRCO NEWS
Scrip: Our next Scrip Order is coming up! Help the NRCO earn additional money by purchasing McMenamins gift cards for our next D4$. Gift cards are sold in $25 increments and we earn 12% (or $3) per card. This event will be held on the evening of Tuesday, April 24th. Scrip orders will be due on Monday, April 16th. Please keep an eye out for order forms in backpacks next week.
Art Lit: April showers bring us Eric Carle for our artist this month. Eric has illustrated over 70 books most of which he wrote. His books are published in 62 different languages. Eric's book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, is the second most recognizable. Eric says his books represent his attempt to bridge the gap from home to school with love, hope, security, and safety. Our students will have the opportunity to create a colorful, fun collage based on Eric's work. If you own his books, it would be a great time to read them with your children or check them out from the library.
STEM Night is coming up on May10! Would your family like to host a science based activity? Flyers went home in backpacks. Please contact Jennifer Vondracheck at jennbernards@hotmail.com for more information.
D4$: This month we have the most amazing D4$ at McMenamins Greenway! On Tuesday, April 24, 5:00 pm to close, McMenamins will donate 50% of all sales to the NRCO. STUDENT SURVEY
Student Survey
Each year the District surveys students, staff, and parents to gather information for planning, program evaluation, and assessment of progress on the District's Strategic Plan.
The student survey takes about 20 minutes during the regular school day. The data gathered from the survey are anonymous; your child will not put his/her name or other identifying information on the survey. Like other surveys, results will be presented only about groups. No individual data will be reported.
Your child may skip questions or stop filling out the survey at any time. Refusing to participate or withdrawing from the survey does not affect your child's grades or class standing in any way. If you or your child does not want to participate, your child can read or do some other activity while his or her classmates complete the survey.
A copy of the survey is available from your child's school and is posted at
https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/district/research-reports
After reviewing the survey, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify the Nancy Ryles Office at 503-356-2400.
KINDERGARTEN SEARCH FOR 2018-2019
Kindergarten Search 2018-2019
If you know of other families who have kindergarten children entering school in September 2018, please encourage them to contact the Nancy Ryles office at 503-356-2400 or give them this form. We are anxious to locate our incoming kindergartners so that we can begin planning for next year. Thank you for your help.
Our Kindergarten Orientation is Thursday, April 12 at 8:45 am.
HEAD LICE INFORMATION
There have been a few isolated cases of head lice reported to the school recently. Head lice is a common condition. It is not associated with a lack of cleanliness or any particular life style.
Head lice should be suspected when there is intense itching of the skull and the back of the neck. The treatment for head lice consists of shampooing the hair with a head lice shampoo or applying a natural/alternative product that smothers the insect. Shampoos can be purchased at any pharmacy. There are also lice treatment salons in Beaverton.
The school office has information about the specifics of head lice treatment. The school would appreciate notification if your child gets head lice. This assists us in taking precautionary measures at school. All information is completely confidential.
OREGONSAFE TIPLINE
Creating a safe learning environment is a critical part of helping each child achieve academic success. SafeOregon is a statewide school safety tip line that gives kids, parents, schools and their communities a way to report safety threats or potential acts of violence. SafeOregon will give students another path for communicating with school administration when school safety incidents occur.
How does SafeOregon work?
Students, parents, and school staff can access SafeOregon through the web form on the SafeOregon website, or by text, email, live call and mobile app.
Why is there a need for a tip line system?
The number one reason why students do not report is the fear of retaliation from their peers. SafeOregon can be accessed from the privacy of a phone, home computer or other Internet equipped device, eliminating the possibility of being identified by another student and thus, decreasing the likelihood that a school safety threat would go unreported.
For more information, please visit the District’s SafeOregon Tipline webpage.
