The Weekly Update
June 18-22
This Week's Highlights
Although my daughter Maggie is on the Seasonal Calendar at EGMS, we still make her complete learning bridge activities every break. She loves learning new things but practice doesn't always come willingly. She reflects later in the year that things were easier for her and if I am lucky, she thanks me for making her do them. I didn't learn to be the "Meanest Mom in the World" from a book though... my mom did the same thing to me when I was a kid! I had to write weekly book reports, complete spelling tests, and had a stack of math practice (which was where I coined the phrase "Meanest Mom in the World"). Thank goodness the internet wasn't around for her to find more projects and work! Looking back on it as an adult, especially an adult in education having that practice during the summer, lead me to be a stronger student and helped prepare me for the types and kinds of thinking I needed to be able to do in the upcoming year.
Summer learning doesn't always look like a workbook, stack of worksheets, or even a stack of books... last weekend we went Carp fishing and made our own bait. It was a great celebration for Father's Day... but even more than that it was a learning experience for the whole family. We had to conduct research (ELA), read our recipe (ELA), follow the recipe (ELA and Math) and because we wanted some bait for all summer we tripled the recipe (math). Of course, while we were Carp fishing we caught and explored lightning bugs and spring peepers (science) and developed a few follow-up questions for further research- like why didn't the Carp like grape flavor this time, but loved it in the fall? Are Carp seasonal fruit eaters?
Whatever you do this summer, be sure to stretch those brain muscles and learn new things. Try stretching your brain out on our 1st summer Math Challenge (found below).
Thanks!

Think about it...
What do you need to do to complete your answer?
