Q3 - What is Suicide, and what factors trigger the behavior? Do you hold to one theoretical explanation over another? Why?
Suicide is the taking of one's own life. This can be accomplished in a plethora of ways and in the mind of the person committing suicide it is ending the hell in which they are existing. It is also, in the mind of the person, to be a gift to those around them as they think they will be better off without them. “ People are most driven to suicide when they view their current situation as being completely hopeless and feel as if they have no way to change things for the better.” (Mental Health Daily 2018)
Factors that trigger suicidal thinking is not a one answer concept. There are lists of the top stresses of life that can catapult a person into depression and then empower the acting upon ending one's life if intervention does not occur. This turns into a loss of hope and seeing there is no way out except to end one's life. In the article 15 Common Causes Of Suicide: Why Do People Kill Themselves? By Mental Health Daily. It gives 15 possible reasons, from depression, bullying, relationship, financial to overeating. It is said in the article that one million people commit suicide every year. The fact that Mental Health is not as widely accepted as physical health is part of the stigma and challenge. I am sure we all know someone who has committed suicide or attempted.
In the news, well-known people that seem to have it all have taken their lives and left the world shocked. This, like those we actually know, have left families and loved ones devastated because they had no idea there was a problem. It comes down to a plethora of factors and has been an issue since the beginning of the human race
I do not hold one theoretical explanation over another, because as vast as the human mind is there is is not just one answer! Suicide can happen in the heat of a moment or take days, months or even years to be driven to that act. “Many suicides (estimates range from 30% to 80%) are impulsive, with just minutes or an hour elapsing between the time a person decides upon suicide and when he or she commits the act. Yet the stressful events that lead to suicidal thoughts are often temporary, such as losing a job or having a romantic relationship end.” (Dadoly 2011)
I say this because I have personally buried over 10 people I know and loved in my lifetime, and each one had a different timeline and factor thereof. The judgment of those who attempt suicide or cry for help actually show the ignorance and empathy of the real issue of the personal pain and cry for acceptance, understanding, and intervention.
In the article What is Suicide? By John M. Grohol, Psy.D. , PsychCentral, he states; “What a lot of people who have never experienced a serious depression or suicidal thoughts don’t understand is how could someone feel so hopeless and depressed to consider ending their entire life? “
Thus, the need for education and awareness in society. There is a brilliant photo of Robin Williams that came out after his death, that I believe has raised awareness of mental health about being kind and aware…
