Mustang Messenger
2018-2019 School Year: Volume 5: Week 5 October 1, 2018
Be the Best YOU at Grandview!!!
Good-bye September, Hello October
As I turn my calendar and look to October, I am so thankful to all of you for making my first month of Grandview so welcoming and so positive. Thank you to all of you for taking time to introduce yourself to me and help me to understand the Grandview traditions and culture. It is a great school and one that I am honored to lead.
A conversation that we have had at our recent District Administration Team meeting was the importance of parent engagement and the impact parent engagement has on a community, school and to the students. In the coming issues of the Mustang Messenger, I will be reaching out to all of you to show how we can improve in this area for our students. Grandview needs our parents in order to continue to reach the student's needs. I can't wait to continue building my relationships with all of you.
One way I have seen parent engagement is the attendance at some of our events. Th back-to-school picnic, FOG events, curriculum night, and Fun Run are some ways parents have shown their engagement to their children's learning, but I know that we are not reaching all of our parents. I look forward to finding more ways to engage all of our Grandview parents and I look forward to hearing your ideas.
Your Proud Principal,
Melissa Carruth, Ed.S

Fun Run
A HUGE thank you to Donna Pelon for all of her efforts in making this such a smooth and fun events for all of the Grandview students. 1st-5th graders ran a total of 286 miles. WOW!! Kindergarten totals were not in at the time of publishing. Donations will be collected up through next week and we raised close to $3,000. Thank you Grandview Families. Also thank you to our sponsors of Bayview Optical, Discount Pet&Supply, Rooter MD, Expert Services, Zeal Credit Union, Zatkoff Seals and Packing, and Fat Kats for their monetary donation for t-shirts and supplies. My apologies if I missed a sponsor. The day could not have gone off without all of the love, time, and support from the Grandview community.
Picture Day
Grandview Elementary Heads to a Red Wings Game
The deadline for the game has been extended to tomorrow, Monday, October 1st. Please send in your orders and money. The game is on Friday, October 26th, and they will be playing the Winnipeg Jets. As this is a school event, Grandview students get them at a reduced cost. Tickets are $35 or $65. The $35 tickets are in the 200 level (face value $70+) and the $65 tickets are in the 100 level (face value is $100+).
There are prizes for selling tickets. If a student sells four or more, the student will be invited with a guest (parent) to an open skate & locker room tour at Little Caesars Arena. This event will take place on a TBD date next spring. If a student sells 8 or more, the student will receive a mini-stick autographed by a Red Wings Player. If the student sells the most tickets, they will receive an official Red Wings youth replica jersey (size L/XL) autographed by a Red Wings Player.

Pink Out Store
With the arrival of October Team Gibson/Terpack will be opening the Pink Out Store. Suckers and other items will be sold to raise money for Karmanos Cancer Center. The store will be set up in the main hallway by the office and will be student run. This store will be starting on Tuesday.
Family in Need Assistance
In the office are applications and envelopes for "families in need" to complete for help around the holidays and for other resources. We want to help you and provide assistance to you and to your family. If you are unable to get to the office, please contact the office, myself, or the classroom teachers and we will send the application home with your child.
Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts
Meetings are underway for both of these great organizations. Girl Scouts will be meeting on Wednesdays and Boy Scouts will be meeting on Mondays at 6:30. Come join the fun!
Transportation Changes
Do not rely on just the office for transportation changes. It is important that you also put it in writing in an email to the teacher. If you alert the teacher and the office, chances are better that the message is delivered accurately. We have so many transportation changes at the end of the day that makes us uneasy that a mistake could occur. Please do not make a change after 3:00!!

M-STEP Reached Your Mailbox
On Friday, we mailed the M-STEP results to our current 4th and 5th graders. Remember that these reports are from the assessment taken last spring. Attached is a link to a video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzmgtB4YAnw&feature=youtu.be to help you to understand how to read the M-Step report as well as the following attachment on How to Read the Report for the appropriate grades.
Free Breakfast and Lunch
Emergency Cards and Transportation Forms
Household Survey Form
We are getting their with the schools household survey forms and we need 100% completion!! Please ask your teacher if you need another copy. We are asking that you fill out and sign the Household Information Survey (one per family), which is needed for administrative purposes, not to determine eligibility. This survey allows our school to benefit from various State and Federal supplemental programs, like Title I A, At Risk (31a), Title II A, E- Rate, etc. This survey is critical in determining the amount of money the school receives from a variety of supplemental programs. Programs, such as our Intervention program, including teachers and paraprofessionals and student support coaches could be lost if these surveys are not completed. We are asking that you please complete and submit it as soon as possible, but no later than September 14. All information on the survey submitted is confidential. Without your assistance, the school cannot maximize utilization of available State and Federal funds. I would like them all turned in by THIS FRIDAY!!
Box Tops
Now is the time to turn in all of the Box Tops you have saved over the summer including all of the Back to School Bonus Box Tops. Please send them to school in a baggie and give them to your child’s teacher. The class will the most Box Tops collected will win a prize!
WE ARE LOOKING FOR A BOX TOPS VOLUNTEER!
Please let the office know if you can volunteer your time to count Box Tops. THANK YOU!
