Dear Hill Students and Families,

In some ways, it is hard to imagine that we have completed 8 weeks of school; we definitely could not be where we are today without the partnership of you and support from the community. This is often the season to reflect on what we are thankful. In the mist of challenges, I have a lot I am thankful for:

· The health and safety of our Hills community and of my own family

· The time I have had with my family and my friends due to this new way life; I hope you have had the chance to experience the same.

· The ability to meet the preferences of our families through standard or online program enrollment

· The grace, patience and understanding for each other as we have worked through many challenges

· The ability of all of us to learn and experience new ways in education

· #DoingThisTogether; parent and community support

· #BOLTBrave Hills teachers and staff who continue to work tirelessly and are top notch in their dedication and care for our students.

My list could go on into greater depth; however, these are things near and dear to my heart. We are continuing to strive to best serve all of our students and families. As always, if you have questions, concerns or suggestions, please reach out to me. It is my goal to bring the best possibilities forth to each of you.

Reminder: There is a lot of information in this newsletter. Please read about conferences and signing up for your preference of Standard or Online Program enrollment for second trimester.

Hybrid Schedule - For Standard Enrollment Students

Everyday will be a day of learning whether your child is onsite at school with in-person instruction or offsite at home with online learning assignments. The Hybrid model allows schools to keep class sizes smaller by having half of the class in attendance on specific days of the week. This enables social distancing and the ability to follow health and safety protocols to assist in preventing the spread of Covid-19.

Students will have an off-site schedule to follow. They are required to check-in for morning meeting and will have a check in with a staff member at some point during the day; attendance will be taken at this time. They will have assignments posted in Seesaw and Must Do's/May Do's to complete.

Standard Enrollment Students (now in the Hybrid Model), please bring your Chromebook back and forth between school and home. All text books and workbooks will now remain at school. If you have not brought them back with you this past week, please do so this next week.

ICCSD Online Learning Program Students (OLP)

Attendance EVERYDAY is important. Please follow the schedules provided by your OLP teachers. Students have at least 4 times that they engage with live instruction via Zoom. Students will also have additional opportunities as needed per their schedules. While students are in Zoom, it is expected that they actively participate by answering questions, responding to instruction and remaining present for the entire lesson. Assignments loaded into Seesaw, Dreambox and Lexia are part of your student's learning engagement.

Hills Library: Curbside Checkout and Classroom Delivery

he Hills Library is excited to offer checkout services with safety measures in place to promote safe handling of materials and socially distanced book selection.

Instead of students coming to the library, the library will be coming to the students!

Highlights of the library checkout safety and quarantine procedures:

  • Book selection will take place through a combination of:

    • Browsing, selecting, and placing holds for books in the online catalog

    • Carts of materials brought to the classroom by the librarian (once a book is touched, it is checked out or quarantined)

    • Librarian book talks

    • Displays in hallway areas (out of reach, for visual perusal)

    • Curated collections based on student interest surveys.

  • Students will not browse for books or return books to the library.

  • Students will return books to a sanitized bin right outside of their classroom at the beginning of the day.

  • These books will be collected first thing in the morning and taken to the library for quarantine.

  • The teacher librarian and secretary will wear gloves when handling books before placing books in quarantine.

  • Materials will be placed in quarantine for at least 72 hours before being circulated.

For students in the Online Learning Program, curbside pickup is available Tuesdays and Thursdays during Grab and Go lunch distribution (12:00 - 1:00). Upon arriving at Hills to pick up books, families will call the office or ring the buzzer, tell Mrs. Perez they are here to pick up books and the student’s name, and she will meet the family at the door with the books.

  • Online students in grades 3 - 6 are learning to browse the online catalog and request books independently. The student and family will receive an email once requested books are available for pickup.

  • Online students in grades K-2 have the option to request books by emailing the teacher librarian with requests and/or having the librarian select books based on interest surveys.

attendance matters

We need your help! Morning Meeting is required per state guidelines for Standard Enrollment students on their off-site days and EVERY DAY for Online Learning Program students. Attendance will be taken at this time. If students are not present, they are marked absent. Please help insure that your child is up and ready to participate in morning meetings.

Assigned work is also important to complete. This provides your child practice with skills and helps teachers know what their next steps are in instructing your child. Off-site/At-Home days have videos and assignments listed that are required. This helps your child continue learning through the guidance of their teacher. As a school district, logging into Seesaw and tracking student activity is recorded. This helps us support you and helps to guide instruction and measure student success.

Attendance is taken for every synchronous (live teacher via zoom link) session. It is so important that your child is present for each session - every day. We realize that technology issues, appointments, etc. may interfere. If you need assistance or need to report an absence, please reach out to us at 319-688-1105.

If your child is ill, has appointments, or a family commitment that prevents them from participating in their online schedule of learning, please call their absence into the main office just like you would for in person learning. It is also recommended and helpful to reach out to the classroom teacher via email. We must hear from the student's parent; not the student during a zoom or the student's email account.

During the month oof November, we have an all-school goal of attendance. We will track student attendance to all online sessions for those enrolled in OLP and all students working at home and at school on standard enrollment. EVERYDAY is a DAY of LEARNING!
