Location
Pamlico Sound is a shallow body of water located along the eastern shore of North Carolina.
Importance of Estuary
It has five major river basins that flow into the sounds. It supports a variety of habitats. There are nursery areas located in the creeks and embayments of the estuary that are important to over 75 species of fish and shellfish.

Rivers, Streams, and Waterways that Feed Into Sound
The five major river basins that flow into the sound are The Chowan, Pasquotank, Tar-Pamlico, and Neuse. The Pamlico Sound also consists of over 9,000 miles of freshwater rivers and streams.
Threats to This Estuary
Threats to this estuary are excessive nutrients, toxic materials, erosion and sedimentation, and habitats loss.
