Celebrate Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month and Indigenous People's Day: October 9th
As we wrap up our celebration of Hispanic/Latinx heritage month, a reminder that celebrations of heritage months are about celebrating diversity - but can also be utilized to remind students of their similarities too. Many children, like Alma in this story, have a story behind their name. You might take an opportunity to build community this week by reading the story, talking to students about their name, and creating a home-school connection by assigning students the task of asking their caregivers a simple question: "How did you choose my name?" It would be a great circle question to build community and celebrate the uniqueness, beauty and history behind a child's name. Here is the story in slides if you'd like to share.
This week, Oregon celebrates Indigenous Peoples' Day October 9th. Please review the slides put together by the Earl Boyles staff.
Please Review: Behavior Updates and "Response to Immediate Safety Concern" Guidance
Grace, patience, flexibility and humor!: Allow yourself the space to reflect, to sit in the space of not having all of the answers in the moment, to take some time to rest. Humor is a way I often try to reconnect with students and staff when things are hard.
(I was reminded of the following variable when I was watching Lisa teach science!)
Structure: Out of all of the variables that change student behavior: (Remember there are 5!)
Structure
Teach/Re-teach
Observe/monitor behavior
Interact Positively
Correct Fluently
Structure is the most powerful and effective variable you can manipulate to change student misbehavior. Consider adding more structure to your transitions and routines to support consistency, clarity and prevention.
Some questions to consider:
-Do my students have a number line order so all students know where to stand? Have I made sure those students needing more support are closer to the front? Have I ensured students who often get off task are separated? How might a number line order support transitions?
-Do my students have an assigned seat on the carpet? Would an assigned seat and/or an assigned sharing partner on the carpet or at desks support increased learning and lessen the amount of time I spend transitioning?
-Do I have consistent routines for the beginning of the day, after lunch/recess, and the end of the day that promote a calm learning environment? This is especially important after lunch/recess AND at the end of the day before students get on the bus.
Please consider adding additional structures to your day to prevent misbehavior from occurring.
Finally: Please take an opportunity to review the Response to Immediate Safety Concern Guidance Document.
K-2 Teachers and IAs: Please pay special attention to what a restraint is or is not:
(From the document:)
Restraint does not include:
◆ Holding a student’s hand or arm to escort the student safely and without the use of force from one area to another;
◆ Assisting a student to complete a task if the student does not resist the physical contact
◆ Providing reasonable intervention with the minimal exertion of force necessary and the
intervention is necessary to:
● Break up a physical fight
● Interrupt a student’s impulsive behavior that threatens the student’s immediate safety,
Finally - all responders to severe behavior (myself, Jenny, Hannah, Oscar, Amparo) are trained in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI training). If you would like to be trained in CPI, please let me know.
October 13th: Professional Learning Schedule
Here is a link to the schedule for October 13th.
Important: Part of our October 13th professional learning will be learning about and implementing the Second Step Anti-Bullying curriculum.
Classroom Teachers Grades 3-5: Sometime this week, please have your students complete the following Google Form (Anti-Bullying Pre-Assessment) so we can assess how students are feeling before we begin implementing our lessons the following week. I'd like to show you this data on 10/13.

Here is a newsletter about transitions that I’ve been sitting with on a personal and professional level (if you have some time for some light reading). (also, a general endorsement of Sophie Lucido Johnson’s art and writing)

Staff Hike! Next Saturday, 10/14 is our first Staff Hike of the year - we're going to Silver Falls State Park, where waterfalls abound and fall colors should be starting. The hike is a 7 mile loop that walks above, along and behind (!) several waterfalls and will have a lunch/brunch stop at the South Lodge, where one can purchase hot coffee/chocolate, ice cream, sandwiches, etc (or eat a picnic from home beside a crackling fire).
ALSO on the 14th, a (partial) annular eclipse! We'll leave a little earlier than usual (7:30?, to be at the trailhead and outside. At Silver Falls, we'll get a little more eclipse than in Portland, somewhere between 80 and 90 percent.

PBIS: New Character Trait for October: Growth Mindset!
Character Trait for October: Growth Mindset:
October is here, which means we're ready for a new character trait! If you don't have the growth mindset printout, please see the attached slides. There are many good resources in the linked in the Google Drive, as well as YouTube, Class Dojo and Epic Books. I don’t know about you, but October is also a time when I need to practice my own Growth Mindset as the shine of a new year wears off and the days grow ever shorter.
Daily breathing practice can lower your blood pressure - a recent study shows that 5 minutes of breathwork a day can be as as effective as some blood pressure medications in lowering a person’s blood pressure. Here’s a recent quick story from NPR that is more digestible than the AHA article linked previously. The devices mentioned in the story cost as little as $25 and are HSA/FSA eligible if you’re looking to spend down your balance before the end of the year.
