St. Clair Middle School News
The P2 Effect at SCMS
St. Clair Middle School continues to center around The Positivity Project where they recently had an assembly where the focus was Kindness, Humility, Self-Control, Gratitude and several other Character Strengths built within the project. The SCMS Student Council does an amazing job of creating agendas for the assemblies, allowing student leaders to be at the forefront of the action. At the latest assembly, the students identified the SCMS adopted endangered species, the Koala, and made plans on how to raise awareness and funds in support of this animal. They were also very fortunate to witness an outstanding holiday performance from the SCMS Choir, led by vocal teacher Mr. David Adragna. Last, the students participated in a fun, relay races and games that involved opening presents with several P2 Character strengths clues inside, organizing them in a way that identified each strength, all while using oven mitts. SCMS continues to engrain the strengths and virtues of The Positivity Project in everything they do.
SCMS Donated Food to Community
The SCMS Student Council recently held their annual Canned Food Drive just in time for the holidays. Students were challenged to bring in canned food and non-perishable items to be donated to the St. Clair Food Pantry. Over 1,000 items were collected and the students and staff were very proud of the amount of items brought into the school. SCMS continues to look for ways to help within the community and showcase their #OtherPeopleMatter mindset.
SCMS Adopts the Koala
St. Clair Middle School’s Student Council adopts an animal each year as part of their Michigan Green School initiative. This year, SCMS students voted on the Koala as their adopted animal. Due to the devastation of fires in Australia, they just completed a spirit week focused lunchtime activities to build awareness of our animal as well as collecting donations used to contribute to help rehabilitate koalas and get them ready for a return to the wild. All in all, over $130 was raised for his endangered species and the money collected, along with several cards signed by students, have been sent to the World Wildlife Federation. St. Clair Middle Staff Spotlight
Matthew Larson is one of the fantastic 5th grade teachers at St. Clair Middle School. He was hired by the East China School District back in 1998 and is currently in his 22nd year of teaching. In the past, Mr. Larson has taught 7th grade ELA, Drama, Speech, French/Spanish and Current Events classes. He was a 5th grade teacher at Gearing before coming to SCMS this past fall. Mr. Larson has been the MCMS 7th grade girls track coach, MCHS boys varsity cross-country coach, served on the elementary curriculum committee, participated in the NGSS Leadership & Math expression training seminars offered through RESA, and is an ECEA Executive Board & Coordinating council member representing the educators in the East China School District.
It’s easy to see that Mr. Larson uses his creativity, humor & passion for learning to help and inspire children to believe in themselves and work toward making their dreams become reality. Both of his parents were educators and both instilled in him a love of and respect for and genuine interest in being a lifelong learner. They also taught him that one of the greatest and important aspects to having knowledge is sharing it with others. Now, as a teacher himself, he loves seeing student confidence levels increase when they use prudence, perseverance and a positive attitude when they face of adversity. Whether they overcome obstacles academically, athletically or in their personal lives it is always a joy to see the change in them from having an "I can't" to an "I can't...yet!" attitude.
Personally, Mr. Larson loves spending time with his amazing wife Tracey, four wonderful children Nicholas, Christopher, Johnathan & Eden as well as his two loving dogs, Hank Zetterberg and Ernie Harwell. He loves performing in plays, musicals or any activity that puts him on a stage or in front of a camera. He enjoys seeing live music, eating good food and attending sporting events... even if it's his beloved and often brutal, Detroit Lions. One of his favorite quotes is, "Wake up with determination. Go to bed with satisfaction."
