All Texas Schools Remain Closed
Texas Governor Greg Abbott amended his Executive Order calling for all schools in the state of Texas to remain closed through the end of the school year. This means Gainesville ISD facilities will remain closed and all events/activities are canceled through the end of May. However, online learning and meal service will continue through our official last day of school, Thursday, May 28.
We know this brings many questions regarding end-of-school activities, prom, graduation, to name a few. In the near future, Mike Morath, TEA Commissioner, will be issuing additional guidance to schools regarding the measures to be taken for our schools. Please know that district and campus leadership are working diligently to ensure that all of our students, teachers, and parents are able to properly close out this academic year. As new developments arise, we can assure that our parents will be notified in a timely manner.
GISD will also continue to discuss plans for summer school and other June activities in the coming days, with announcements made as the status of summer activities are confirmed.
All of our families are encouraged to continue to stay home, avoid contact within six feet of other people, and follow social distancing directives for essential activities only as outlined by city, county, and state officials.
Weekend meals are back!
Per the District calendar set forth for this year, Monday, April 20, was scheduled as a bad weather make up day. Due to the current circumstances and previously missed instruction time, Monday will be a distance learning/work day for all GISD students and staff.
As a result of Monday now being a regular school day, the student meal service will be provided. As a reminder, anyone 18 and under is able to receive meals. Please have the child present at pick up, which is from 8am-1pm at Edison or Gainesville Junior High.
In addition, as of Friday, April 17, we are once again able to provide weekend meals. Each student may receive 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, and 3 dinners on Fridays. Thank you to the Boys & Girls Club and the Intrinsic Foundation for partnering with GISD to help provide and serve the first round of weekend meals.
New Way to Access Distance Learning
Distance learning will continue through the week of May 18. If your child is currently utilizing See Saw, Google Classroom, or printed packets, they can continue as in previous weeks, as this is just an additional resource. Four weeks of summer learning will also be available for students.

GISD elections postponed to November 3
On March 18, Governor Abbott issued a proclamation suspending provisions of the Texas Election Code to allow political subdivisions to postpone their 2020 local elections. This means local governments now have the ability to postpone their May 2, 2020 elections until November 3, 2020.
As a result of Governor Abbott's proclamation, at the Board of Trustees meeting on March 23, the Board voted to postpone the May election until November 3 due to the current COVID-19 crisis. The May election consisted of the $35.1 bond proposal as well as the Board of Trustees election.
