What's New in Room 182

Mrs. Peters' 3rd Grade * December 4, 2015

Back to work!

It was so much fun to get back into the groove this week, with three full weeks of December to fill with learning! We focused a lot on making our classroom and building transitions as smooth as possible, so that we can get the most out of our day!

A special "high five" to parents and students for an amazing boost to the class average on prefix test scores this week! Your extra studying and time on Spelling City (and some of you, even homemade flashcards!) really paid off. Keep up the outstanding work!

Mrs. Peters

And today's Mystery Reader was... Mrs. Neeser!

Thank you Leslie Neeser, Connor's mom, for being today's Mystery Reader! We really loved hearing the beginning of I Was A Third Grade Spy and plan to check out some of Mary Jane Auch's other novels soon!

Don't forget to make us one of your New Year's Resolutions and come read to us in 2016!

More information and a sign-up page can be found here. We hope to see you, or someone special to your third grader, on one of our mystery days!

Focus on the Curriculum

ELA

  • Weekly Prefix: Super-, Sur- (over, above, beyond)

Please make sure your student is completing their Matching Activity in their Learning Log on Monday night, so that they have plenty of time to learn their new words.

Also, they must complete five Spelling City activities at home (via web or free app) during the week to practice.

  • Summarizing

Students will build on what they learned about finding the main idea and supporting details of a nonfiction text to write summaries. A sample template we use can be found here.

Math

  • Chapter 7: Multidigit Multiplication and Division

Students are using many different strategies to master these skills! They ALL need to practice, practice, practice memorizing those multiplication facts at home, though!! Use IXL or www.multiplication.com,a FANTASTIC resource with teaching points, games, and printable flashcards.

Homework will be "Weekly Review #9", sent home Monday and due Friday.

Science

  • Sun, Moon, & Stars
Student wonderings and questions are really driving the direction of this unit. They will spend time in stations this week exploring more ideas about space. Be sure to ask what they're learning and be on the lookout for current events and stories in your every day lives about space!
