Writing
This week we will write about a character using specific details and adjectives to create a descriptive narrative story. We will also learn to use sound effect words and proper nouns to make our writing more interesting and personal to a reader. We will learn to use figurative language in our writing and we will learn about similes and metaphors. Our narratives will become more sophisticated as we incorporate these new techniques in our pieces.
Haddon Township Multi-school Arts Project
Our class will be participating in a creative and exciting curriculum opportunity! We will be working on a project that spans 3 schools, 3 age-levels and involves 3 subject areas (literacy, art and technology). 2T will be collaborating with the Haddon Township High School Ceramics II class and 5th Grade at Stoy School. Our class will begin the project this week by creating a well-developed character in a story. The students will have the opportunity to work with Karen Kiick, the High School Art teacher, and myself to create the head of their character by sculpting it out of clay. Students will read their stories to the High School students through Google Hangout. The HS ceramics students will listen to and read the stories created by our students, build bodies for the heads based on 2T's descriptions and their interpretations of our stories. They will then pass the fired pieces on to Stoy 5th Grade. The 5th Grade class will read the 2T stories, and paint the completed ceramic characters. The 5th graders will then invent and write a news report about the characters and photograph that character in a setting that supports their story. The 5th Graders will create a news report video to support their story with 2T's original characters! I can't wait to see the amazing results of this project and be a part of the process of such a highly integrated learning experience!
Social Studies
Social Studies: Learn About People
This week we will begin Unit 4 in Social Studies. Each student will draw and label a mural including captions and pictures depicting their family and their unique family culture. Students will learn the meaning of culture. We will create a class chart of family names and cultural backgrounds.
