Happenings from February 2018
3rd Grade Research
Third grade began their research process to learn all about changes in the Earth's surface. It takes place over three weeks and we are using the Guided Inquiry process. In the Open and Immerse stage, they watched a video about landslides to build some background knowledge and then generated some questions. The following week in the Gather stage, the students used the library iPads to scan QR codes about eight different natural disasters and took notes and cited their sources using information from the online database PebbleGo. In March, the students will create their final product to demonstrate what they learned.
2nd Grade Research
Second grade also began their research process about biographies. They too will be using the Guided Inquiry Process. In the Open Stage, they reviewed what we have learned previously about biographies and learned what a timeline is and created their own personal timeline. In the Immerse Stage, they used the library iPads to scan QR codes to go to the PebbleGo database biography area and learn about different famous people. In March, prior to Spring Break they will complete the Gather Stage and after Spring Break they will create their final product.
Plickers
We tried out the Plickers app in the library to review inferencing skills with third grade. Plickers is a quick way to check student understanding and encourages 100 percent participation and students can answer without feeling self conscious. The students hold up a card to show their answer and no card is the same. The students loved it. Only one device is needed to check their answers, so it is very easy to use.
New Books!
We were so excited to have 316 new books arrive in February. This order comprised of books that have a copyright date no older than 2016. We are working towards the district goal of having our average collection age be no older than 2015.
Spring Break Reading Challenge
Keep a look out for a new reading challenge. It will be sent home the Wednesday prior to Spring Break. The students are to read a minimum of 15 minutes for 15 times and color a shamrock each time they read. When they return the completed form they will choose one of the superheroes that are in the photo above.
Spring Book Fair
Thanks to our wonderful volunteers our Paws For Books Book Fair ran smoothly and was a big success. Without their help, we could not have done it so well. Our next Book Fair will be held in October during the week of early release.
