Fourth Grade PEAK
October 7, 2014
Special Announcements:
2. Please start to discuss at home potential Power of One ideas. The Power of One Project is a student-designed project to make a different in the world. It is a long term project. We will be writing plans in November and students will have until April 1 to implement the plan. Discuss at home - passions you have as a family. I stress 4 P's:
Passion - What is my passion?
Purpose - How am I going to make a difference?
Planning - What steps do I need to follow to have a successful project to impact the world?
Permission - Do my parents and teacher approve of the project?
4 P's = ONE POWERFUL POWER OF ONE PROJECT
THEME: Kids CAN
KIDS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE:
- We reviewed how to write headings and subheadings for our research topic.
- We heard about Amber Lynn Coffman who started Happy Helpers for the homeless
- We continued taking notes -- everyone did a fantastic job for the second official week of note taking. This is a tough skill to learn - students are deciding big ideas (headings), smaller ideas (subheadings), reading for significant information and then deciding what is most important and writing notes in their words.
- Learned a new citation too - Easy Bib!
- Critical thinking - Compare and Contrast: Students read two articles about humanitarian organizations. The students compared and contrasted the two articles and then wrote original interpretations to process what they read. If your child did not finish, it is homework and can be completed through Google Classroom!
Centers
Enrichment Centers:
- Topic Study: Students are busy taking notes. Students are tightening up their essential question. Many students are finishing their vocabulary presentation and starting new projects.
- Math: We continue to solve problems. We have some excellent math problem solvers. A few students are getting really close to finishing their first math ticket --- AWESOME!
- Science: We wrapped up the experiment by answering follow up questions and making graphs of our data. As we conduct science experiments, we will revisit the theme: Truth in Advertising. We are using the scientific method to test advertising claims.
