A MESSAGE FROM MS. PEARSON

Dear Chávez Families,

To our Hybrid families, welcome back! And to our Same School Online families, I hope your transition has gone smoothly. Those of us back in the building are so excited to see our students in person. These new changes, although sometimes frustrating in their complexity, bring hope for the future.

For those of you dropping off and picking up your students from school, thanks for making our new routine go so smoothly. As a reminder, cars will pull over to the white-striped "Pause Parking" lane for curbside dropoff and pickup. Grades K-2 will take the second left in the parking lot, and grades 3-5 will take the first left. Please keep your speed to 5 MPH in the parking lot. And remember, if you have a few extra minutes, you can park in the Albertsons lot and take the short walk to our building across the creek and along the bike path. It is a pleasant way to start the day, especially with this sunshine!

A few of you have asked me about the camping situation in the lot across the street from school. This lot is managed by the City of Eugene, not 4J. In February, I invited the City Manager and the Chief of Police to visit our school and do a walkthrough in order to see firsthand how close it is to our school. They both came to visit and were very supportive. Since then, the City has taken significant steps to keep the site clean and safe. They have added dumpsters, restrooms, and handwashing stations. There are now staff on site monitoring spacing, cleanliness, and behavior. The Eugene Police Department have increased their presence in the area, and for a few weeks they stationed their Mobile Command Unit bus in the adjacent parking lot.

If you have feedback or concerns about the camping at the 13th Avenue location, I encourage you to contact the City Manager and/or your local City Councilor.

FACE COVERING REMINDERS:

Students returning to in-person learning should understand and be ready to follow these simple rules for face coverings—right kind, right way, all the times.

  • Face coverings must be worn at all times, indoors and outdoors, including while in class, during recess, and riding on a school bus.
  • Face coverings should fit snugly and cover nose, mouth and chin at all times.
  • Face coverings must be an effective design. No gaiters, bandanas, masks with valves, or face shields alone (face shields may be worn in addition to masks).
We have extra masks for kids who need them. Just ask any adult at school.

SPOTLIGHT ON: MS. KARA

Big picture

I've worked at many schools in 4J as a teacher and consultant and now I'm in the new position of Student Success Coordinator at Chávez. I'm so excited to be back working in the school district after 7 years working at the University of Oregon. I've been having so much fun this week connecting with kids (and staff) again!

I am originally from New Jersey and moved to Eugene after finishing college. I live with my husband Brian, who is also a teacher in 4J, our two kids, Sam (13) and Maya (10), our dog Reilly, and our cat Luna. Although we miss our east coast family, we love living here.

In my free time, I like to spend time with family and friends, bake and cook, see live music, read, get crafty with my daughter, watch my son play lacrosse, hike, cross-country ski or snowshoe, travel, go camping or do whatever other fun things that come up!

SOME ATTENDANCE REMINDERS AND TIPS FOR THE HYBRID SCHEDULE

Some attendance reminders and tips now that we are starting our hybrid schedule:

  • Know what cohort your student is in and what time school starts and ends (contact your child's teacher if you need help)
  • Identify a quiet place and schedule for your child to do school work on the days they are home.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make her feel comfortable and excited about learning
  • Establish regular bedtime and morning routine.
  • Develop back-up plans for getting your child to school or logging in to the computer if you can’t be there to help.
  • When school is in session, avoid extended family trips and non-urgent medical appointments.
  • Let your child's teacher know about any concerns you have.

SUGGESTIONS FOR STUDENTS & PARENTS FROM MS. BREEYA, OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST

Big picture

AVID CORNER

As we transition to Spring Term and Hybrid Learning, our focus continues to be on organization. Students schedules are changing and we want them to be as prepared as possible for their new routines. For the next two months, we want to be as proactive as possible so as we all adjust to hybrid learning, we will be paying close attention to the needs and challenges that arise. We will then utilize our AVID strategies and lesson time to address those needs. Our goal is for students to have a successful and productive Spring Term at Chavez!
