OBOB Teams are Forming
Dear 3rd-5th Grade Students and Parents/Guardians,
It’s that time of year again, and your students may already have read some of this year’s selection of sixteen Battle books. Last year our school won the regional championship for Oregon Battle of the Books, and all of the teams enjoyed months of practices and battles. This year we hope that McKinley students will once again be involved in reading from the book list and competing in teams. For more information, go to OBOB’s website: www.oregonbattleofthebooks.org.
Details:
- Permission Slips are due. If you need one, stop by the office to pick one up.
- Teams should be formed and ready for your first meeting on November 17th
- Reading Requirements and team size: To ensure a minimum level of participation, students must have read or listened to at least one of the titles before joining a team. Teams will be selected beginning in November, and they will be finalized before winter break. It is not expected that each student reads all sixteen of the books in the book list. With four students per team (with the option of also adding one alternate member), students on a competitive team usually read at least four books each. It is up to each team to divide up the book list and to coordinate and motivate their own team.
- Practices and Battles: This year there will be one practice a week starting November 17th. Practices will be held during lunch break on Thursdays. Battles begin in January and will be held at the end of the school day. The schedule will depend on how many teams we have. In February, we will have a final tournament in the evening. McKinley’s winning team will go to the regional competition in the spring.
Parents with questions or who are interested in helping, please contact OBOB coordinators Lea Hinchcliff (618-201-7420) or Tressa Hart (801-472-4838).
Books are available at most bookstores, online and in store. The local bookstore, Escape Fiction does give a discount on OBOB books. For more information, check out the Escape Fiction website.

Rainy Day Recess
No Halloween Costumes
In an effort to minimize disruptions and maximize our education hours, we ask that students not wear Halloween costumes to school. We know that some families celebrate Halloween; others choose not to for many reasons. We make these kinds of decisions based on inclusiveness for our school community, and whether they support our educational mission.
Please save costumes for your home celebrations. Thanks for your understanding and continuing support.

IN-DISTRICT STUDENT TRANSFER APPLICATIONS OPEN NOVEMBER 1-30
Students who want to attend a school other than their assigned school may apply for an in-district transfer (IDT) between November 1–30, 2022. If your student already has an approved IDT, you do not need to fill out the application. There is no guarantee a transfer request will be approved. Students attending school on an IDT are not eligible for bus transportation. IDT applications received after November 30, 2022, will not be considered. If an IDT is granted at this time, the students will start at the new school when they return to school in January 2023.
In-district transfer request forms can be picked up at your student’s assigned school. They will also be posted on the Student Transfers page on November 1. The webpage will also include instructions on how to turn in the forms via email, snail mail. It is preferred that families fill out the forms and drop them off at their assigned schools.
DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAMS EXPANDED TO MORE SCHOOL
More students have access to dual language (English/Spanish) instruction this year in Salem-Keizer Public Schools with four elementary schools and two middle schools being added to the program. Salem-Keizer’s Dual Language Program encourages students to develop multicultural appreciation and awareness, while attaining literacy in both English and Spanish.

2022-23 Meal Prices: Free!
Thanks to the USDA’s Seamless Summer Option, we will be able to feed all students breakfast and lunch at school for free this year.
Lunch Menus Food Services will not be printing lunch menus to send to the schools. They will post on each schools website, as well on the District website. They are having a hard time getting anything on a consistent basis and cannot depend on suppliers to have what is needed. The food chain/Supply and Demand is ever flexing.
