ELA
In the module B task, students will examine a world map and consider the lands that they learned about in this unit. They will choose a land that they read about in One Land, Many Cultures, Clothes in Many Cultures or Making Music and create a page with information about that land.
As you begin to prepare for unit 5, Knowing about Patterns and Structures, you can find the module study here to help you unpack the unit.

Math
During the month of February, kindergarten students will be subtracting with 6, 7, and 8 with no unknown. They will progress from the concrete level of acting out, crossing out objects in a set, and breaking and hiding parts, to more formal representations of decomposition recorded as or matched to equations (C – B = ___). They will explore composition, decomposition, and number pairs using the number bond model. It is essential that students build deep understanding and skill with identifying the number pairs of 6 through 10 because this is foundational to Grade 1’s fluency with sums and differences within 10, as well as Grade 2’s fluency with sums and differences to 20. To learn more about these topics, click here to access the Module 4 Study.
The Module 5 Study is scheduled to be released on 3/6/19. It is recommended Module 5 begin on 3/26/19. Students have worked intensively within 10 and have often counted to 30 using the Rekenrek during Fluency Practice. This sets the stage for Module 5, where students clarify the meaning of the 10 ones and some ones within a teen number and extend that understanding to count to 100.
Science
This unit is also a great time to continue to build peer to peer conversation around science topics. The SOS Strategies in DE are an excellent resource. The link below highlights the Top 10 SOS Strategies for Primary.

Social Studies
Starting February 1st, we celebrate Black History Month. Teaching children about the historical accomplishments and struggles of African Americans benefits everyone by connecting our students with a rich history and allowing them to hear about individuals and events that forged a nation. In the spirit of honoring African American pioneers and landmark events in black history, engage your students in activities and texts that develop compassion and a better understanding of cultural diversity.
